Jawad Anani (born 28 June 1943) [1] [2] is a Jordanian economist and politician. After working for the Central Bank of Jordan in the 1960s and 1970s he held high ranking positions in the civil service. He has held several ministerial posts since 1979,including a four-year stint as Minister of Labour between 1980 and 1984. During the early 1990s he held positions as Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and Minister of Information,and was involved in the peace-process between Jordan and Israel. During the later half of the decade he was Deputy Prime Minister for Development Affairs,Foreign Minister and Chief of the Royal Court. From June 2016 until January 2017 he was Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs in the cabinets of Hani Al-Mulki.
Anani was born in 1943 in Halhul. [3] [4] His father had various jobs,including working as an English language teacher,radio presenter,historian,writer and playwright. Jawad Anani had six brothers and two sisters. [5] Anani went to the United States to study engineering at the University of Southern California (USC). While following his courses Robert Mundell pressured Anani to study economics. After two years Anani decided to study economics and dropped out of USC. His father advised him that if he wanted to study economics he should do so in the Arab world. Anani thus moved to Egypt and studied at Cairo University and obtained his bachelor's degree there in 1967. He subsequently moved back to the United States and obtained his master's degree at Vanderbilt University in 1970,and his PhD at the University of Georgia in 1975. [5]
In 1967 Anani started working for the Central Bank of Jordan,he was senior researcher at the Economic Research Department. In 1977 he also started working for the Ministry of Labour as Under-Secretary,he was Director of Social Security until 1979. [6] In his latter position he had an important role in the creation of the Social Security Corporation. [7]
Anani's political career started in 1979 when he became Minister of Supply. He served in that position until 1980 and was then appointed as Minister of Labour which he was until 1984. In that year he served as Minister of Industry,Trade and Tourism. [8] He was president of the Royal Scientific Society between 1986 and 1989. [6] In 1991 Anani was a Jordanian delegate to the Madrid Conference of 1991. [5]
In 1993 he was appointed to the management board of the failing Petra Bank,where he helped cut losses. [7] Later the same year he was appointed as Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and Minister of Information,which he was until 1995. [8] [9] During that period he was co-ordinator for the peace talks with Israel. [7] [10] He was Deputy Prime Minister for Development Affairs between 1997 and 1998. In 1998 he was Minister for Foreign Affairs. [8] He was Chief of the Royal Court between 1998 and 1999,he served as the last Chief under King Hussein of Jordan. [6] [11] He held the same position for a short while under King Abdullah II of Jordan. [7]
In 2012 Anani was made President of the Social and Economic Council. [5] In 2013 he stated that he saw Jordan's accession to the Gulf Co-operation Council as a "natural step" citing its "economic,financial,labor,strategic,security and cultural relations with the council". [12] Anani has been appointed a member of the Senate several times,most recently in 2013,when he stepped down as President of the Social and Economic Council. [5] Anani previously served in the Senate from 1993 to 2001. [6]
On 1 June 2016 he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of Industry,Trade and Supply in the cabinet of Hani Al-Mulki. [13] In a cabinet reshuffle on 28 September 2016 he retained his post of Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs,his ministerial post,was however,changed to that of Minister of State for Investment Affairs. He was succeeded as Minister of Industry,Trade and Supply by Yarub Qudah. [14] On 15 January 2017 Anani resigned as Deputy Prime Minister for Economic affairs and Minister of State for Investment Affairs. [15]

The politics of Jordan takes place in a framework of a parliamentary monarchy,whereby the Prime Minister of Jordan is head of government,and of a multi-party system. Jordan is a constitutional monarchy based on the constitution promulgated on January 8,1952. The king exercises his power through the government he appoints which is responsible before the Parliament. In contrast to most parliamentary monarchies,the monarchy of Jordan is not ceremonial,with the King having significant influence over the affairs of the country.
Hani Fawzi Mulki is a Jordanian politician that held several ministerial and diplomatic positions,and he was Chief Commissioner of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority before his designation as the 41st Prime Minister of Jordan by King Abdullah II and approval by the House of Representatives on 29 May 2016.

Wajih Mousa Owais is a Jordanian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. He was appointed as Minister in February 2011. Owais was the Professor of Genetics,a researcher,chairman of Board of Directors of King Abdullah University Hospital,and the President of Jordan University of Science and Technology from September,2003 to February,2011. In 1972,he got his B.Sc. in the field of biology from the American University of Beirut. In 1975,he got his M.Sc. in the field of biochemistry from the University of Jordan. In 1979,he obtained his Ph.D. in the field of molecular genetics from Washington State University.
The Cabinetof Jordan is led by the Prime Minister who is appointed by the King. The Prime Minister is then free to form his own cabinet which is responsible to the Chamber of Deputies on matters of general policy and can be forced to resign by a two-thirds vote of "no confidence" by that body or be dismissed by the King.
Ghaleb Zu'bi is a Jordanian lawyer and politician who served in different post at the various cabinets of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Zu'bi was appointed minister of interior by Prime Minister Hani Al-Mulki on 15 January 2017 and served in the post until 25 February 2018.

After entering the House of Representatives during the 11th Parliament he held stints as Minister of Water and Irrigation and later Housing and Works during the early 1990s. He served terms as Speaker of the House of Representatives during the 12th,13th,14th,15th and 17th Parliaments. Between November 2010 and July 2011 he was Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister.

Khawaldeh was subsequently appointed to the Senate.
The Prime Minister of Jordan,Hani Al-Mulki,was tasked with forming a cabinet on 29 May 2016. The new cabinet was sworn in by King Abdullah II on 1 June 2016. After the September 2016 general election,Mulki formed a new cabinet. The Cabinet consisted of 28 members,three of them also serving as Deputy Prime Ministers. 11 Ministers returned from the latest formation of the previous cabinet of Abdullah Ensour,while 9 others had served in earlier cabinets. 8 Ministers had no previous experience in cabinet. Four women obtained a position as Minister. Three university presidents were appointed to Mulki's cabinet:Rida Khawaldeh,Wajih Owais and Mahmoud Sheyyab. The cabinet reformed the Ministry of Youth,which had been abandoned in 2012.

The 2018 Jordanian protests started as a general strike organized by more than 30 trade unions on 30 May 2018 after the government of Hani Mulki submitted a new tax law to Parliament. The bill followed IMF-backed austerity measures adopted by Mulki's government since 2016 that aimed to tackle Jordan's growing public debt. Although Jordan had been relatively unscathed from the violence that swept the region following the 2011 Arab Spring,its economy had taken a hit from the surrounding turmoil and from an influx of a large number of Syrian refugees into the country. Jordan also hosts a large contingent of Iraqi and Palestinian refugees,further straining its finances. The UNHCR places Jordan as the world's second largest host of refugees per capita.
Omar Razzaz is a Jordanian politician who served as the 42nd Prime Minister of Jordan from June 14,2018 to October 12,2020. He was designated to form a new government on 5 June 2018 after his predecessor resigned as a result of widespread protests against IMF-backed austerity measures in the country.
