Professor Jayantha Lal Ratnasekera (born November 1962) is a Sri Lankan academic. He has served as the Vice Chancellor of Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka, from February 2017 to November 2023.

Early life

Ratnasekera's primary education came at Agrabodhi Vidyalaya, Kanthale, and his secondary education at Nalanda College, Colombo, (1972-1980). He graduated from Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, with an honors degree in chemistry in 1988. In 1993 he earned his PhD in Chemistry there.

Career

Ratnasekera joined Rajarata University of Sri Lanka as a Senior Lecturer in August 1996, and was promoted to Professor in Chemistry in 2018. He served as Head of the Department of Physical Sciences from 1996 to 1999, and as Dean of Faculty of Applied Sciences from 1999 to 2005.

Ratnasekera was appointed to the Post of Vice Chancellor of Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka in January, 2017. [1] [2] He has served as the Chair of the Committee of Vice Chancellors & Directors (CVCD), during 2021.

His research interests are in renewable energy sources, environmental chemistry, theoretical chemistry, quality assurance in higher education, and science education. Cocoa production contributes to the national economy of Sri Lanka. It is grown in fairly dense shade and generally cultivated under coconut and rubber. Although cocoa production remains a source of revenue, it is no longer a main economic sector. The great part of cocoa cultivation occurs in the Matale, Kandy, Badulla, Kurunegala, Kegalle and Monaragala districts. The first cocoa plants were introduced to the country in 1819. Recent years cocoa production has increased by nearly $22.6 million (2015).

Gathsaurie Neelika Malavige is a Sri Lankan academic, university professor, researcher and scientist. She is the head as well as the professor at the Department of Immunology and Molecular Sciences of the Sri Jayawardenepura University, Faculty of Medical Sciences since 2020. She is a visiting lecturer at University of Oxford since 2008. She is married to Lasantha Malavige who is regarded as Sri Lanka's first sexologist.

Kotambewaththe Gedara Dilshi Maheesha Shyamali Kumarasingha also simply known as K. G. D. M. S. Kumarasinghe or Dilshi Kumarasinghe aka Shyamali Kumarasinghe is a Sri Lankan track and field athlete and a national record holder in women's 800m. She is currently coached by Susantha Fernando.
