Jeff Nelson (born 28 March 1961) is an American former long distance runner. [1] He was a high school phenom at Burbank High School (Burbank, California), where he set the national high school record in the 2 mile run, the predecessor to today's 3200 meter run, at 8:36.3. [2] He set the record before a national television audience, running in open competition at the Pepsi Invitational, May 6, 1979 at the University of California, Los Angeles. [3]

The record would stand until June 20, 2008, when it was surpassed by German Fernandez from Riverbank High School, who ran an 8:34.40 at the Nike Outdoor Nationals. [4] Fernandez had run an 8:34.23 for 3200 meters three weeks earlier at the CIF California State Meet, which was a faster time for the slightly shorter distance. The CIF mark is the current NFHS national record at the official distance. Nelson's mark was set before the event became the 3200 meters. Converted, Fernandez' mark was equivalent to about an 8:37.5 2 mile (slightly slower than Nelson).

Nelson was also on the United States team at the 1979 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, finishing 4th overall in the junior men's division, handily besting future star Steve Cram in the process. [3]

As a precursor to the record, he ran an indoor 2 mile at the Sunkist Invitational in 8:55.1. A few weeks later, in an open race in the Jack in the Box Indoor Invitational in San Diego he ran an outstanding 8:42.7, which was narrowly behind Gerry Lindgren's all-time high school best, set indoors in 1964. He won the CIF California State Meet twice in 1978 and 1979. [5] He went undefeated his senior cross country season, 14 for 14 while setting 14 course records in the process, including the famed Mt. SAC course. Prior to the cross country season, Nelson was reportedly running 100 miles a week, peaking at 142, inspired by (among others) the success of local runner Mark Covert winning the Division II NCAA Men's Cross Country Championship. After his success in high school, Nelson went to the University of Oregon on full scholarship, joining top runners Alberto Salazar, Rudy Chapa, Art Boileau and Jim Hill. There he sustained an injury, which eventually drove him from the university. The following year he showed up healthy at Glendale Community College (California), where his individual victory led his team to the State Community College Championships in Cross Country. The women's team also won in 1980, the first time a school had won both championships in the same season. But Nelson was injured again, twice. By 1982, he decided not to continue running. [6]

The entire 1980 championship team, men and women, [7] including Nelson was inducted into the Glendale College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. [8] As an individual, Nelson was inducted in 2009. [9]

With his half marathon record time (59:43), he became the first U.S. runner to break the one-hour barrier in the event. He is also the only American to run a sub-2:05 marathon. However, this time is not eligible to be a record due to the course being point-to-point and a net-downhill course. Hall won the marathon at the 2008 United States Olympic trials and placed tenth in the Olympic marathon in Beijing.

Solinsky is the current assistant coach of the Oregon Ducks cross country team at the University of Oregon. Among his more notable achievements, he won eight state championships in high school and five NCAA Division I championships at the University of Wisconsin. He was the American 10,000 meters record holder with a time of 26:59.60 as well as the first non-African to break the 27-minute barrier in the 10,000 m.

German Fernandez is a retired American professional runner from Riverbank, California, known for his performance in high school and collegiate cross country and track and field. Later he trained under Jerry Schumacher for the Bowerman Track Club. He is most well known for running the California Cross Country State Meet course record (14:24), as well as running a new American high-school record, 8:34.40 for two miles, at the 2008 Nike Outdoor Nationals championship. He also holds the World Junior Indoor Mile record at 3:55.02. A local meet in Riverbank, California, the German Fernandez Distance Carnival, is named after him.

Kimberly Mortensen is the girl's individual winner of the 1995 Footlocker Cross Country Championships and a former national high school record holder in the 3200 meter run. In December of 1995, Mortensen capped off a successful senior cross country season by winning the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships 5K in 17:12:4 at Balboa Park in San Diego, California. On May 24, 1996 she ran 9:48.59 in the 3200 meter race for the California CIF-Southern Sections Masters track and field meet, run at Cerritos College in Norwalk, California. Her performance, in the qualifying meet for the California Interscholastic Federation State Championships capped an exceptional senior year at Thousand Oaks High School. She was the third athlete from suburban Ventura County to be named both the Gatorade Player of the Year and the Track and Field News High School Athlete of the Year, a list that includes one time teammate Marion Jones. Following her national high school record breaking race, she went on to win the California State Championship race a week later in 9:52.80. Her then California State Championship record time of 9:52:80 was superseded by Jordan Hasay and Laurynne Chetelat's exceptional battle in the 2008 version of that same meet. Mortensen's national high school 3200 meter record time was eventually broken 22 years later by Katelyn Tuohy's 9:47:88 in May of 2018.

Scott Bauhs is an American professional distance runner sponsored by Asics and runs for Asics Aggies. He is a former Chico State runner for NCAA Division II athletics. He is the youngest American to complete both the four-minute mile and the 28-minute 10,000-meter run.

Herschel Curry Smith (1903–1983) was an American athletic coach in the sport of track and field at Compton Jr. College. He is also popularly known as the founder of the Compton Invitational, and the co-founder of the Los Angeles Invitational, both track meets located in Southern California, the United States of America. Smith was also a sprint athlete and world record holder. As a team member of the University of Southern California (USC) track team, in 1927 his relay team broke the world record in the 800-meter and 880-yard relay. Smith was the head coach of Compton College from 1928 to 1968 and was the founder of the Compton Invitational and its director from 1936 to 1969. Herschel was also the co-founder, with Al Franken, and the meet director of the first indoor track meet on the west coast. Smith coached many world-class athletes including record high-jumpers Cornelius Johnson and Charles Dumas. Tim Nelson is an American distance runner, who earned All-American honors at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and represented the US in the 2009 World Track and Field Championships.

The Foothill League is a high school athletic conference in the Santa Clarita Valley area of Los Angeles County, California that is affiliated with the CIF Southern Section. All current members are part of the William S. Hart Union High School District.

The Bell-Jeff Invitational is an eponymous, annual cross country event hosted by Bellarmine-Jefferson High School in Griffith Park since 1973. Starting early in the morning on the last Saturday in September, the series of races over the course of the day play host to over a hundred different high school cross country teams from across the CIF Southern Section and other sections of the state.

Fernando Cabada Jr. is an American distance runner. He first established himself in the national running scene while in high school when he was ranked among the ten fastest high school boys in the 3200 meters in the United States. Having developed a reputation as an elite prospect, he accepted a scholarship from University of Arkansas, but became disenchanted with school and attended a total of four different colleges before quitting running altogether and pursuing manual labor jobs in the early 2000s. Cabada then returned to competitive running with Virginia Intermont College coach Scott Simmons, who helped Cabada prepare for his 2006 marathon debut in Fukuoka, Japan, which he ran in 2:12:27. Since then, Cabada established himself primarily as a marathoner.

Emilio "Leo" Martin Young is an American long-distance runner. He represented his home country in the 2023 World Athletics Cross Country Championships where he led his team to a bronze medal in the (U20) Junior race a week and a half before his 18th birthday. His 16th place was the highest from a non-East African country. He qualified for the World Championships by winning the U20 race at the USA Cross Country Championships.
