Jefferson Montessori Academy

Jefferson Montessori Academy is a K-12 charter school located in Carlsbad, New Mexico. It was the first Montessori public school in New Mexico ^{[ citation needed ]} and is one of two charter schools in Carlsbad.^[1] The school serves students in grades K-12 and is part of the Carlsbad Municipal School District.^[2]

A charter school is a school that receives government funding but operates independently of the established state school system in which it is located. Charter schools are an example of public asset privatization.

Carlsbad is a city in and the county seat of Eddy County, New Mexico, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 26,138. Carlsbad is centered at the intersection of U.S. Routes 62/180 and 285, and is the principal city of the Carlsbad-Artesia Micropolitan Statistical Area, which has a total population of 55,435. Located in the southeastern part of New Mexico, Carlsbad straddles the Pecos River and sits at the eastern edge of the Guadalupe Mountains.

State schools, called public schools in North America and many other countries, are generally primary or secondary schools mandated for or offered to all children without charge, funded in whole or in part by taxation.

It was founded by Arleen Standiford, Patricia Verch, and Catherine Novich Brown. The principal is Stacey Frakes. The charter school proposal was originally denied in October 2000, but was approved the following year in December 2001. The school opened to students in August 2002. For its first few years it operated in a privately owned facility, but it is now in a school-district-owned facility.^[1]

In 2010, Jefferson Montessori Academy was named "Charter School of the Year" by The New Mexico Coalition for Charter Schools.^[1]

New Orleans Public Schools (NOPS) is the public school system that serves all of New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. Schools within the system are governed by a multitude of entities, including the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB), which directly administers 6 schools and has granted charters to another 18, and the Recovery School District of Louisiana (RSD), which no longer directly administers any schools within Orleans Parish. Instead, all public schools operating under the RSD umbrella within Orleans Parish are, as of the Fall of 2014, independent public charter schools.
