On July 1,2015,she became the 13th president of Cornell University—the first woman to serve as president of the university. She died from colon cancer on March 6,2016,the first Cornell president to die while in office.

Cudd is considered one of the founders of analytical feminism,was a founding member of the Society for Analytical Feminism,and served as its president from 1995 to 1999. On March 10,2023,Cudd was formally selected as the 11th president of Portland State University.
