Jennifer Wootton Mascall (born December 11, 1952) is a modern dance choreographer, performer, and teacher. After completing a formal training at York University, she went on to work with several dance companies, and as an independent dancer and choreographer in parts of Europe, the U.S and Canada. She is the founder and Artistic Director of Vancouver dance company Mascall Dance Society where she teaches and choreographs. [1] [2] [3]
Mascall graduated with a bachelor of fine arts from York University, in 1974. [1] She was a member of the first graduating class of this research-based dance school. She trained formally in many disciplines of human movement. In 1998, under the guidance of Bonnie Bainbridge, Mascall completed certification as a "Body-Mind Centering Practitioner". [1] In 2005 and 2012, she travelled to India to train in Hatha Yoga. Additionally, Mascall trained with Judith Koltai in "authentic movement" and extensively with Linda Putnam of the Evergreen Theatre School. [2] Two of her other modern dance teachers were Twyla Tharp and Merce Cunningham.
Mascall's first work as a choreographer was "Attica", in 1974. During this year, she also initiated GRID, a dance company in Downtown Toronto which put on productions at specific sites throughout the city; these performances highlighted the environments in which they occurred.
Mascall went on to perform with Douglas Dunn's Lazy Madge company in 1977 and 1978. [3] She participated in the first Canadian National Choreographic Seminar: an event hosted by Grant Strate, in 1978. Additionally during this period, she worked independently as a solo dancer and choreographer in Canada, the US and parts of Europe.
In 1979, Mascall collected and published "Footnotes". [4] The work was produced and bound independently as a sampler of wide-ranging choreographic notation methods and voices of the period. In 1980, Jennifer headed to Vancouver and joined the Paula Ross Dance Company
Mascall, along with six other innovative choreographers founded the collective EDAM (Experimental Dance and Music), in 1982. [5] This Vancouver-based dance school continues today and is committed to the investigation of movement itself as an expressive art form.
The Mascall Dance Society is based in St. Paul's Anglican Church in Vancouver's West End; the group hosts a number of different performances and classes throughout the year. Though the Mascall Dance Society was initially founded in 1982; it was largely inactive until 1989 when it was rekindled. [6] The Society has since worked with hundreds of artists, creating live performance, films, and videos.
While Jennifer Mascall works as the company's primary choreographer, the society also mentors emerging artists and new choreographers. The organization's mandates include: promoting the public appreciation of and exposure to dance and its related arts; researching human movement and physical motivation; and educating dancers and the public in modern dance traditions, history, technique, and discoveries. [7] The Nijinsky Gibber Jazz Club is an annual improvisation research ensemble. It was started in 1990, during the early days of the Mascall Dance Society. [8] Dancers are accompanied by live DJs, musicians or spoken word artists. The Nijinsky Gibber Jazz Club is performed in bars, churches, streets, and other atypical venues for which such an event to take place. [9]
The Way Out West (WOW) Summer Intensive has been held since 2003. [10] It's focused on introducing the uninitiated and enabling dancers to deepen their existing artistic practice. Traces of Emily Carr is a multi-media portrait based on the life, art and writings of Canadian artist, Emily Carr (1871–1945). Traces of Emily Carr has toured across Canada, through the highlands of Scotland and performed at the Spoleto Festival in Italy. [11]

Choreography is the art or practice of designing sequences of movements of physical bodies in which motion or form or both are specified. Choreography may also refer to the design itself. A choreographer is one who creates choreographies by practising the art of choreography, a process known as choreographing. It most commonly refers to dance choreography.
Contemporary dance is a genre of dance performance that developed during the mid-twentieth century and has since grown to become one of the dominant genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world, with particularly strong popularity in the U.S. and Europe. Although originally informed by and borrowing from classical, modern, and jazz styles, it has come to incorporate elements from many styles of dance. Due to its technical similarities, it is often perceived to be closely related to modern dance, ballet, and other classical concert dance styles.
Postmodern dance is a 20th century concert dance form that came into popularity in the early 1960s. While the term "postmodern" took on a different meaning when used to describe dance, the dance form did take inspiration from the ideologies of the wider Postmodern movement, which "sought to deflate what it saw as overly pretentious and ultimately self-serving modernist views of art and the artist" and was, more generally, a departure from modernist ideals. Lacking stylistic homogeny, Postmodern dance was discerned mainly by its anti-modern dance sentiments rather than by its dance style. The dance form was a reaction to the compositional and presentational constraints of the preceding generation of modern dance, hailing the use of everyday movement as valid performance art and advocating for unconventional methods of dance composition.
Anna Sokolow was an American dancer and choreographer known for the social justice focus and theatricality of her work, and for her support of the development of Modern Dance in Mexico and in Israel. At the beginning of her career, Anna Sokolow was a principal dancer in the Martha Graham Company (1930-1938) and she soon became an independent choreographer who went on to form multiple dance companies throughout her life beginning with “Dance Unit” in the 1930s and later The Player's Project which launched in 1971 and re-launched in the 1980s. Sokolow choreographed for and set her work on companies around the world, including major companies such as Batsheva Dance Company, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, The Jose Limón Dance Company, Joffery Ballet and the Daniel Lewis Dance Company. Her work continues to be performed by the Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble in New York City. Her work is preserved and set by the Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble and the Sokolow Dance Foundation in Massachusetts.
Pearl Eileen Primus was an American dancer, choreographer and anthropologist. Primus played an important role in the presentation of African dance to American audiences. Early in her career she saw the need to promote African dance as an art form worthy of study and performance. Primus' work was a reaction to myths of savagery and the lack of knowledge about African people. It was an effort to guide the Western world to view African dance as an important and dignified statement about another way of life.
Bronislava Nijinska was a Polish ballet dancer, and an innovative choreographer. She came of age in a family of traveling, professional dancers.
The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is Canada's oldest ballet company and the longest continuously operating ballet company in North America.
Shen Wei is a Chinese-American choreographer, painter, and director who resides in New York City. Widely recognized for his defining vision of an intercultural and interdisciplinary mode of movement-based performance, Shen Wei creates original works that employ an assortment of media elements, including dance, painting, sound, sculpture, theater and video. Frequently, critics have commented on his innovative blend of Asian and Western sensibilities, as well as his syncretic approach to performance art.
The Ballets Russes was an itinerant ballet company begun in Paris that performed between 1909 and 1929 throughout Europe and on tours to North and South America. The company never performed in Russia, where the Revolution disrupted society. After its initial Paris season, the company had no formal ties there.
Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is America's premier contemporary dance company based in Chicago. Hubbard Street performs in downtown Chicago at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance and at the Edlis Neeson Theater at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. Hubbard Street also tours nationally and internationally throughout the year.
Barbara Bourget is a dancer, choreographer and the artistic director of Kokoro Dance Theatre Society in Vancouver, British Columbia. She is known for her butoh performances and choreography. Her work has been described as difficult, punishing and uncompromising. She was born in Port Alberni, British Columbia in 1950.
Modern dance is a broad genre of western concert or theatrical dance which included dance styles such as ballet, folk, ethnic, religious, and social dancing; and primarily arose out of Europe and the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was considered to have been developed as a rejection of, or rebellion against, classical ballet, and also a way to express social concerns like socioeconomic and cultural factors.
Paul Belville Taylor Jr. was an American dancer and choreographer. He was one of the last living members of the third generation of America's modern dance artists. He founded the Paul Taylor Dance Company in 1954 in New York City.
Crystal Pite is a Canadian choreographer and dancer. She began her professional dance career in 1988 at Ballet BC and in 1996 she joined Ballett Frankfurt under the tutelage of William Forsythe. After leaving Ballett Frankfurt she became the resident choreographer of Montreal company Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal from 2001 to 2004. She then returned to Vancouver where she focused on choreographing while continuing to dance in her own pieces until 2010. In 2002 she formed her own company called Kidd Pivot, which produced her original works Uncollected Work (2003), Double Story (2004), Lost Action (2006), Dark Matters (2009), The You Show (2010), The Tempest Replica (2011), Betroffenheit (2015), and Revisor (2019) to date. Throughout her career she has been commissioned by many international dance companies to create new pieces, including The Second Person (2007) for Netherlands Dans Theater and Emergence (2009) for the National Ballet of Canada, the latter of which was awarded four Dora Mavor Moore Awards.
The physically integrated dance movement is part of the disability culture movement, which recognizes and celebrates the first-person experience of disability, not as a medical model construct but as a social phenomenon, through artistic, literary, and other creative means.
Michelle Dorrance is an American tap dancer, performer, choreographer, teacher and director. Awarded a MacArthur "Genius Grant", she is the Founder and Artistic Director of Dorrance Dance. Dorrance is known for her creative ensemble choreography, rhythm tap style and ambitious collaborative projects with fellow tap dance choreographers and musicians. She is currently a 2017 Choreographic Fellow at New York City Center and an Artist in Residence at the American Tap Dance Foundation. Dorrance lives in Brooklyn, New York.
Karen Jamieson is a Canadian dancer, choreographer, and dance teacher in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Abdel R. Salaam was born in Harlem, New York City. He is a choreographer, director, producer, mentor, and educator. He has been active in the arts since 1955. He is the co-founder and director of Forces of Nature Dance Theatre located in New York City. He is also the artistic director of DanceAfrica. DanceAfrica was founded by Chuck Davis (dancer). DanceAfrica festival has become one of the largest African American dance, music, and art festival in the United States of America. Thousands of people attend the yearly festival which takes place at the Brooklyn Academy of Music during the Memorial Day holiday. The festival includes an outdoor bazaar, films, music, and workshops. It is one of Brooklyn Academy of Music's longest running festival.
Wen Wei Wang is a Chinese-Canadian businessman, choreographer, dancer, and teacher. Born in Xi'an, China, he moved to Vancouver permanently in 1991. He established the dance company Wen Wei Dance in 2003 and has since created 8 full-length works for the company. He is currently the artistic director of both Wen Wei Dance and Ballet Edmonton as of 2018.
Roger Pryor Dodge was an American ballet, vaudeville, and jazz dancer, as well as a choreographer and pioneering jazz critic. He formed the first extensive collection of photographic portraits of Vaslav Nijinsky.
