Jian Cao is a materials scientist and mechanical engineer whose research includes the mechanical behavior and manufacturing of sheet metal and woven composite materials, including dieless deformation and laser additive manufacturing processes. [1] She is Cardiss Collins Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University and director of the Northwestern Initiative for Manufacturing Science and Innovation.
Cao studied materials science and engineering and automatic control at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, earning a bachelor's degree there in 1989. She went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for graduate study in mechanical engineering, earned a master's degree there in 1992, and completed her Ph.D. in 1995, [2] [3] under the supervision of Mary Cunningham Boyce. [4]
After postdoctoral research at MIT, she became an assistant professor at Northwestern University in 1995. She was promoted to associate professor in 2002, and served as a program director at the National Science Foundation from 2003 to 2005. Returning to Northwestern, she became a full professor in 2008, adding courtesy affiliations with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2010 and with the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 2018. From 2012 to 2021 she also served as the university's Associate Vice President for Research. She was named Cardiss Collins Professor in 2016. [4]
Cao founded the Northwestern Initiative for Manufacturing Science and Innovation in 2015, and has been director since its founding. In 2016, she became a Senior Institute Fellow at Argonne National Laboratory. [4] She has been editor-in-chief of the Journal of Materials Processing Technology since 2018. [4] [5]
Cao was elected as an ASME Fellow in 2006, [6] as a Fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers in 2010 (SME), as a Fellow of the International Academy for Production Engineering in 2014, [4] and as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2018, recognized "for her fundamental contributions to the understanding of failure mechanisms in forming processes and for innovations to advance flexible manufacturing processes". [7] She was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2022, "for pioneering a flexible sheet forming system and for leadership in manufacturing", [8] and to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2023. [9]
She received the ASME Thomas J.R. Hughes Young Investigator Award in 2006, the Distinguished Service Award of the ASME Manufacturing Engineering Division in 2009 and 2013, the ASME Dedicated Service Award in 2011, the ASME Charles Russ Richards Memorial Award in 2017, [4] the ASME Milton C. Shaw Manufacturing Research Medal in 2020, [10] and the ASME Ted Belytschko Applied Mechanics Division Award in 2023. [11] She was the 2016 winner of the SME Frederick W. Taylor Research Medal, [12] and the 2020 winner of the SME Gold Medal, "for her creative and pioneering contributions to the development of the scientific and technological bases of innovative manufacturing processes through extensive publication, speaking and public service activities". Romesh C. Batra is a University Distinguished Professor and Clifton C. Garvin Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia. He was born in Village Dherowal, Punjab, India. His family migrated from Dherowal to Shahabad Markanda, Haryana, India after India became an independent country. Dr. Batra has authored the book, Elements of Continuum Mechanics, AIAA Educational Series. Dr. Ramulu Mamidala is a mechanical engineering professor at University of Washington. Usually goes by the name 'Ram', or 'M.R.', he is recognized for his leadership and outstanding record in promoting collaborative education and research with industry. He is currently the director of Manufacturing Science and Technology Laboratory (MSTL) at Mechanical Engineering Department, University of Washington. He has designed and developed manufacturing methods for a wide range of systems, from the B2 bomber to the Boeing 787. Additionally, in collaboration with industry, he established and directed two interdisciplinary graduate educational programs in engineering and management and a certificate program in composites tooling and manufacturing. His exemplary collaborative efforts motivated working engineers to pursue doctoral studies and he is a leader in using emerging technologies in distance education to reach non-traditional students.
Y. Lawrence Yao is a mechanical engineer, who has done groundbreaking research in the field of laser assisted manufacturing. He is well known for developing process synthesis methodology for laser forming process, for developing micro-scale laser shock peening process, and for innovative applications in renewable energy, biomedical, and art restoration areas.
Ted Bohdan Belytschko was an American mechanical engineer. He was Walter P. Murphy Professor and McCormick Professor of Computational Mechanics at Northwestern University. He worked in the field of computational solid mechanics and was known for development of methods like element-free Galerkin method and the Extended finite element method.
Thomas Joseph Robert Hughes is a Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics and currently holds the Computational and Applied Mathematics Chair (III) at the Oden Institute at The University of Texas at Austin. Hughes has been listed as an ISI Highly Cited Author in Engineering by the ISI Web of Knowledge, Thomson Scientific Company.

Subra Suresh is an Indian-born American engineer, materials scientist, and academic leader. He is currently Professor at Large at Brown University and Vannevar Bush Professor of Engineering Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was Dean of the School of Engineering at MIT from 2007 to 2010 before being appointed as Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) by Barack Obama, where he served from 2010 to 2013. He was the president of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) from 2013 to 2017. Between 2018 and 2022, he was the fourth President of Singapore's Nanyang Technological University (NTU), where he was also the inaugural Distinguished University Professor.
Jan Drewes Achenbach was a professor emeritus at Northwestern University. Achenbach was born in the northern region of the Netherlands, in Leeuwarden. He studied aeronautics at Delft University of Technology, which he finished with a M.Sc. degree in 1959. Thereafter, he went to the United States, Stanford University, where he received his Ph.D. degree in 1962. After working for a year as a preceptor at Columbia University, he was then appointed as assistant professor at Northwestern University.

He is also the founder and chief technology officer of Ulendo Technologies, Inc. His research is in the area of manufacturing automation, control engineering, and mechatronics.
L. Catherine Brinson is an American materials scientist who is the Sharon C. and Harold L. Yoh, III Distinguished Professor at Duke University. Her research considers nanostructured polymers and shape-memory alloys. She was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2020.
Somnath Ghosh is the Michael G. Callas Chair Professor in the Department of Civil & Systems Engineering and a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). He is the founding director of the JHU Center for Integrated Structure-Materials Modeling and Simulation (CISMMS) and was the director of an Air Force Center of Excellence in Integrated Materials Modeling (CEIMM). Prior to his appointment at JHU, Ghosh was the John B. Nordholt Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering at Ohio State University.
