James Philbin (born 22 July 1950) is a British fencer. He competed in the team sabre event at the 1984 Summer Olympics. [1] [2]

Fencing career

Philbin was a five times British fencing champion, winning the sabre title at the British Fencing Championships in 1976, 1977, 1978, 1981 and 1983. [3] In 1984, he was selected to represent Great Britain at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He participated in the men's team sabre event. [4] He was a member of the British team from 1973 until 1984, winning his first major Home International event in 1977. [5]

Personal life

In 1985 he married fellow fencing Champion Hilary Cawthorne. [4]

He is also a successful fencing coach, a career which started in 1981. He represented the United States at four Senior World Championships. Mormando's Sabre Teammates at the Olympics include Peter Westbrook, Michael Lofton, Robert “Bobby” Cottingham, Phil Reilly, Joel Glucksman, Paul Friedberg, and John Friedberg. He is also a member of the Fencers Club in New York (USA).

Gary Fletcher is a British fencer. He competed in the individual and team sabre events at the 1992 Summer Olympics. In 1990, he won the sabre title at the British Fencing Championships.

Peter Whiteside was a British modern pentathlete. He competed at the 1980 Summer Olympics, and he was the British Modern Pentathlon champion in 1985. He died from complications due to COVID-19.
