JoAnne Graf is an American former softball coach and Associate Professor in Sport Management at Florida State University. As coach of the Florida State Seminoles women's softball team from 1979 to 2008, she logged more wins than any coach in the history of NCAA Division I softball. On April 2, 2005, Florida State University renamed their softball stadium in her honor as the JoAnne Graf Field at the Seminole Softball Complex.

Education

Graf earned her Bachelor degree from Florida State University (FSU) in 1975. [1] While earning her master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1978, she spent two years as the assistant softball coach for the Greensboro Spartans. [2] She completed her PhD at FSU in 1992. [1]

Seminoles coaching career

Graf returned to Florida State University in 1979 to coach the Florida State Seminoles women's softball team. She recorded her first win on February 26, 1979 against Chipola College. [3] Over her 30-year coaching career at Florida State from 1979 to 2008, she led the team to 7 College World Series Games, 17 NCAA tournaments, and 10 Atlantic Coast Conference titles. [4] From 1995 until 2000, she coached the Seminoles to a record breaking six straight ACC Championship titles. [5] By 2001, she had the most wins of any active coach in Division I softball and was awarded the Florida State Alumni Association Circle of Gold Award. [6]

On February 18, 2004, she became the second Division I coach, and third overall, to reach 1,000 wins. [7] In honor of her achievements, Florida State University renamed the softball stadium JoAnne Graf Field at the Seminole Softball Complex on April 2, 2005. [8] In April 2006, she became the second NCAA Division 1 coach to reach 1,110 wins. [9]

By the time Graf retired in 2008, she had logged more wins than any other coach in the history of Division I softball, with a record of 1,437 wins. [1] Her team had averaged 48 wins per year and produced 25 All-America players, which also earned her six ACC coach of the year awards. [1]

In 2013, she was inducted into Florida State University's Hall of Fame. [10] In 2018, she was honored by Florida State University as a distinguished alumna. [11]

Angela Tincher O'Brien is an American, former collegiate All-American, retired professional All-Star softball pitcher and coach. She most recently served as the pitching coach at Virginia Tech. She was a 2008 first-round draft selection for the NPF Akron Racers. She is a graduate of James River High School and a 2008 graduate of Virginia Tech. In 2013, she was hired as Virginia Tech's softball pitching coach where she owns numerous school records. She is the ACC career leader in wins, strikeouts, shutouts, innings pitched, strikeout ratio and no-hitters, while also ranking in several records for the NCAA Division I, where she is one of five pitchers to achieve 100 wins, 1,000 strikeouts, an ERA under 1.00 and average double-digit strikeouts for her career.

Clemson–Florida State football rivalry American college football rivalry

The Clemson–Florida State football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Clemson Tigers football team of Clemson University and Florida State Seminoles football team of Florida State University. The schools have played each other annually since 1992. Both universities are members of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), and since the ACC initiated divisional play in 2005, both teams have competed in the ACC's Atlantic Division. For several years in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the matchup was known alternatively as the Bowden Bowl for the father, former head coach Bobby Bowden of the Seminoles, and the son, Tommy Bowden, formerly head coach of the Tigers.

Katherine Burkhart is an American, former collegiate All-American, retired professional All-Star softball pitcher and softball coach. She played college softball at Arizona State, and won a national championship with the team in 2008 and was named Most Outstanding Player. Burkhart holds the career records in wins, strikeouts, perfect games, WHIP, innings pitched and strikeout ratio for the school. She also ranks in several career pitching categories and the top-10 for strikeouts and perfect games for both the Pac-12 Conference and the NCAA Division I. She has also pitched for the USA Softball team. Burkhart was drafted first overall and played for the USSSA Pride, Tennessee Diamonds and Carolina Diamonds in the National Pro Fastpitch, where she currently is a top-10 career leader in strikeout ratio, WHIP and complete games. Additionally she also played in Japan. Following the 2012 NPF season, Burkhart announced her retirement as a player. In 2011 she was inducted into the SLOHS & ASA Hall of Fame. Following her career her Jersey was retired from Arizona State University in 2017. Then in 2018 she was inducted to the Arizona State University Hall of Fame. Nicole "Nikki" Myers is an American, former collegiate All-American, right-handed hitting softball pitcher originally from St. Petersburg, Florida. She played for the Florida Atlantic University Owls from 1999 to 2002. Myers is the Atlantic Sun Conference career leader in strikeouts, ERA, shutouts, WHIP, no-hitters and innings pitched. She also owns numerous school records in both offense and pitching categories and holds the career pitching Triple Crown for the Owls and is one of three NCAA Division I softball players to reach both the 1,000 strikeouts and 50 home runs clubs for a career.

Leslie Malerich is an Italian-American former collegiate and Olympic softball pitcher and coach originally from Merrillville, Indiana. She attended and played for the Florida State Seminoles from 1999 to 2002 and is the school's career leader in innings pitched in the Atlantic Coast Conference, where she was named the 2001 player of the year. She also competed for Italy in the 2004 Summer Olympics.

Lacey Waldrop

Lacey Waldrop is an American, former collegiate All-American professional softball pitcher and current assistant coach at Houston. Waldrop was a starting pitcher for Florida State, where she is the school career leader in wins and was named USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year in 2014. Waldrop was drafted third overall in the 2015 NPF Draft by the Chicago Bandits, and won two consecutive Cowles Cup championships with the Bandits in 2015 and 2016.

Jessica Burroughs is an American, former collegiate All-American, professional All-Star softball pitcher. She played college softball at Florida State, being named a four-time all-conference and back-to-back Pitcher of the Year in her last two seasons. She would help the Seminoles to a semifinal finish at the 2016 Women's College World Series. Burroughs was selected first overall by the USSSA Pride in the 2017 NPF Draft. She went on to play for and win consecutive titles with the Pride in 2018 and 2019. She later played in the inaugural season of the Athletes Unlimited Softball league in 2020.

The 2014 NCAA Division I softball season, play of college softball in the United States organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division I level, began in February 2014. The season progressed through the regular season, many conference tournaments and championship series, and concluded with the 2014 NCAA Division I Softball Tournament and 2014 Women's College World Series. The Women's College World Series, consisting of the eight remaining teams in the NCAA Tournament and held in Oklahoma City at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium, ended on June 3, 2014.
