Jo Mingyu, often spelled Cho Minkyu (born 19 November 1990) is a South Korean opera singer, the leader and leggero tenor of crossover vocal group Forestella. He was discovered during Phantom Singer 2 , a televised talent reality show in 2017.
Jo Mingyu was born in Taebaek, his mother was a kindergarten teacher, while his father taught at the Taebeak Mechanical Technical High School. [3] He started learning music from a very young age, upon the wishes of his mother, who dreamt of being a singer. She supported both of her children to learn music, Jo's older sister studied piano. In 1998, the family moved to Chuncheon. After his sister stopped playing the piano in 2004, Jo's mother turned her full attention to the musical education of her son, which he considers to be a turning point in his life. [2]
In 2006, he was admitted to Seoul Arts High School, then in 2009, he started his education at Seoul National University, studying vocal music. He participated in several singing competitions, where he became a semi-finalist, finalist or winner. In 2011, he became the youngest finalist of the DongA Music Competition. [2] That year he lent his singing voice to actor Lee David in the war film The Front Line . [4]
During this period, he became unsure of his future, as he failed to win several competitions and received harsh criticism. In 2013, he decided to further his studies at Seoul National University's graduate school. Here, he found new inspiration under the supervision of opera singer and university professor Kwangchul Youn. He also gave singing lessons at the university dorm. [2] He started working for the Seoul Metropolitan Opera and participated in various stages. [5]
In 2015, he was a semi-finalist at the Montreal International Musical Competition, after which he started his compulsory military service as a conscripted policeman. [2] In 2016, at the Geneva International Music Competition, he was told he would not be able to get lead singing roles in opera, due to his light leggero tone. This shook his view of his future and considered quitting singing when he came across the first season of Phantom Singer and decided to apply for the second season. He thought crossover music might be a viable solution for his voice type. [2]
During the competition, Jo selected Ko Woo-rim for the 2nd round of the competition and trained him. Then, he selected Bae Doo-hoon for the 3rd round of the competition to add variety to the team color. In the final competition, Kang Hyung-ho joined the team. Jo Mingyu got the nickname "Strategist" during the competition because he meticulously considered each contestant's timbre and whether they would match his voice before selecting them. [6]
His first solo single, titled "Sinsegye: New Age" (신세계: New Age) was released in February 2020. [2] In December 2021, he released his first minialbum, Sinsegye: Parana (신세계: Parana), followed by a two-day solo concert in Seoul. [7]
Jo defines his voice type as a leggero tenor, because of which he was told he would not be able to play lead roles in opera. [2] During the audition to Phantom Singer 2, composer and producer Yoon Sang described Jo's voice as "the most unique voice I have heard among tenors", and also added that he had never seen such a "young and delicate tenor timbre" before and found it "incredibly amazing". Singer Bada called it "attractive", while Michael K. Lee said "there is something free and easy about the way you sing, like the sun's coming out. It's really lovely". Kim Mun-jeong musical director called his tone "refreshing" and praised his expressive performance. [8]

A tenor is a type of classical male singing voice whose vocal range lies between the countertenor and baritone voice types. It is the highest male chest voice type. Composers typically write music for this voice in the range from the second B below middle C to the G above middle C (i.e. B2 to G4) in choral music, and from the second B flat below middle C to the C above middle C (B♭2 to C5) in operatic music, but the range can extend at either end. Subtypes of tenor include the leggero tenor, lyric tenor, spinto tenor, dramatic tenor, heldentenor, and tenor buffo or spieltenor.
Vocal range is the range of pitches that a human voice can phonate. A common application is within the context of singing, where it is used as a defining characteristic for classifying singing voices into voice types. It is also a topic of study within linguistics, phonetics, and speech-language pathology, particularly in relation to the study of tonal languages and certain types of vocal disorders, although it has little practical application in terms of speech.
Tenore di grazia, also called leggero tenor, is a lightweight, flexible tenor voice type. The tenor roles written in the early 19th-century Italian operas are invariably leggero tenor roles, especially those by Rossini such as Lindoro in L'italiana in Algeri, Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola, and Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia; and those by Bellini such as Gualtiero in Il pirata, Elvino in La sonnambula and Arturo in I puritani. Many Donizetti roles, such as Nemorino in L'elisir d'amore and Ernesto in Don Pasquale, Tonio in La fille du régiment, are also tenore di grazia roles. One of the most famous leggero tenors of that period was Giovanni Battista Rubini, for whom Bellini wrote nearly all his operas.

A voice type is a group of voices with similar vocal ranges, capable of singing in a similar tessitura, and with similar vocal transition points (passaggi). Voice classification is most strongly associated with European classical music, though it, and the terms it utilizes, are used in other styles of music as well.
There is no authoritative system of voice classification in non-classical music as classical terms are used to describe not merely various vocal ranges, but specific vocal timbres unique to each range. These timbres are produced by classical training techniques with which most popular singers are not intimately familiar, and which even those that are do not universally employ them.

Jung Ki-yeol, known professionally as Kai, is a South Korean singer and musical theatre actor. He is a classically-trained baritone best known in musical theatre and has starred in Korean productions of A Tale of Two Cities, The Three Musketeers, Phantom, Jekyll & Hyde and Les Misérables. Baek In-tae and Yoo Seul-gi are classical tenors by training and studied together at Hanyang University under Baritone Go Sung-hyun. Yoo Seul-gi led his class every year, both in college and masters program.

The show's season 1 was aired from November 11, 2016, to January 27, 2017, every Friday at 21:00. Season 2 was aired from August 11, 2017, to November 11, 2017, every Friday at 21:00. Season 3 was aired from April 10, 2020, to July 3, 2020, every Friday at 21:00. A special season Phantom Singer All Stars was aired from January 26, 2021, to April 20, 2021. Forestella (Korean: 포레스텔라) is a South Korean crossover male vocal quartet formed through the JTBC singing competition Phantom Singer 2, which aired in 2017. They won first place on the show and officially debuted on March 14, 2018, with the album Evolution. Since their debut, they have released another two studio albums and gained public recognition for their performances on Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend, festivals and other televised concerts. They competed in a total of eight episodes and hold six consecutive wins on Immortal Songs special King of Kings, which is considered an absolute record in the show's history.

Crezl is a South Korean crossover male vocal quartet formed through the JTBC singing competition program, Phantom Singer 4, which aired in 2023. They officially debuted as a group after advancing to the final round of competition. The name, Crezl, is a portmanteau of the English word "creative" and the Korean word "즐겁다; jeulgeopda" meaning "joyful/fun" to reflect their aspirations to enjoy and create music that displays the unique qualities and personalities of the four members who come from different music genres and share that joy with those that hear their music.
