Joseph L. Paskvan (born May 19,1952) is an attorney and a former Democratic member of the Alaska Senate. He represented the residents of District E,which includes the entire city limits of Fairbanks and several neighborhoods just outside,from 2009 through 2012. [1]
Joe Paskvan was born in Fairbanks,Alaska,where he has lived his entire life save for a several year period during law school. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1970. His father,Tom Paskvan,after obtaining benefits through the GI Bill,opened a bar called the Elbow Room on Second Avenue in Fairbanks in 1947. The Elbow Room remained in business through subsequent owners until 2003. Joe was manager of the bar from 1973 to 1978. He earned a B.A. in political science from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1975,and a Juris Doctor from the University of Puget Sound School of Law in 1981.
Paskvan had an internship in 1981 under Judge Alexander O. Bryner of the Alaska Court of Appeals,the year after the court was established. He worked for the law firm of Rice,Hoppner,Brown,&Brunner until 1986,when he started his own partnership,Paskvan &Ringstad PC.
He was elected in November 2008 to an open seat,as incumbent Gary Wilken retired after 3 terms. In the general election,he defeated Cynthia Henry,a gift shop owner who served on both the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly and the University of Alaska Board of Regents.
On November 6,2012,Paskvan lost his general election bid to Pete Kelly.

He was also the Republican vice presidential nominee in the 1916 presidential election. Had the Republican ticket been elected,Fairbanks would have become the third vice president to multiple presidents,after George Clinton and John C. Calhoun.

Sean Randall Parnell is an American attorney and politician. He succeeded Sarah Palin in July 2009 to become the tenth governor of Alaska and served until 2014. Parnell was elected governor in his own right in 2010 with 59.06% of the vote,as the largest percentage margin of any Alaska governor since statehood. John Bruce Coghill Jr. is an American politician who served as a member of the Alaska Senate,representing North Pole and other communities in the Fairbanks North Star Borough. First elected to the Alaska House of Representatives in 1998,he was appointed to his Senate seat in 2009 and was the Senate's majority leader from 2013 to 2016. During his Senate tenure,he served as Rules Committee chairman. In 2020,he lost re-election by 14 votes to fellow Republican Robert Myers Jr.,who defeated him in the state's Republican primary election.

Catherine Andrea Giessel,is a Republican politician from the U.S. state of Alaska,who served as a member of the Alaska Senate from 2011 to 2021. From 2013 to 2021,Giessel represented District N in the Alaska Senate,including Northeast Anchorage,Anchorage Hillside and the Turnagain Arm communities of Bird,Girdwood,Indian,and Anchorage,all within the Municipality of Anchorage. First elected in 2010 while identifying with Tea Party values,she has also served as the vice-chair of the state Republican Party and had a career in nursing. Following redistricting,she was elected to a different senate seat in 2012. Giessel serves as chair of the Resources Committee and is a member of the Senate Majority Caucus. After Senate President Pete Kelly was unseated in 2018,Giessel was elected president of the Alaska Senate,a post she held until 2021.

Kenneth James Fanning is an American hunting and fishing guide and former politician. In 1980,Fanning was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives as a Libertarian,becoming the second person elected to a U.S. state legislature under that party,following his political mentor Dick Randolph. Fanning served a single term,losing reelection. He later joined the Republican Party and was appointed to fill out a vacancy in the Alaska Senate in 1987,serving in that body for a little over a year.

Since becoming the 49th state of the United States on January 3,1959 Alaska has not had a public,American Bar Association-accredited law school. A 1975 study by former Alaska Attorney General (1970–1973) John E. Havelock concluded that the state did not require a law school. Without a state law school,Alaska did not receive a 2001 distribution of the complete legal papers of Abraham Lincoln and the Alaska Law Review has been published outside Alaska.
