Joel Kristian Naukkarinen (born 30 March 1993) [1] is a competitive Finnish rower. Naukkarinen is a four-time world champion in indoor rowing, a ten-time World Championship medalist and a three-time European Championship medalist.
Naukkarinen holds 16 Finnish records and one standing world record. Naukkarinen has 152 Finnish Championship medals. Naukkarinen has won the Nordic Championships in 2015 and 2022. [2]
In February 2022, Naukkarinen was awarded Rower of the Month by the World Rowing Federation. [3]

In 2015, Naukkarinen became the first men's open category rower to win the Finnish Championship title in all distances (500 m, 2,000 m, 10,000 m and 42,195 m). [4]
In total Naukkarinen has won 9 World Championship medals and 4 European Championship medals in indoor rowing. [5] [6] [7]
Naukkarinen has broken the world records for 100 m, one minute and 100 kilometers. [8] [9] His 100 kilometer record of 6:06:06.1 (average speed 1:49.8/500 m) is still standing, from when Naukkarinen rowed at the Kuopio Market Square at the opening of the Christmas season on 24 November 2018. In January 2023, Naukkarinen earned the silver for the men's 2,000 m at the European World Indoor Championships in Paris, France with a time of 05:51.5. [12] [13]
In November 2022, Naukkarinen qualified and was invited to participate in the World Indoor Rowing Championships in Mississauga, Canada. [14] He ranked first out of 10 men invited to the Versa Challenge to determine the most fit versatile rower in the world. [15] [16] On 26 March 2023, Naukkarinen earned the title of World Indoor Rowing Versa Champion after completing 4 indoor rowing events over 2 days. [17]

In the 2022 World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals, Naukkarinen won Finland's first medal at the championships. [19]
An indoor rower, or rowing machine, is a machine used to simulate the action of watercraft rowing for the purpose of exercise or training for rowing. Modern indoor rowers are often known as ergometers because they measure work performed by the rower. Indoor rowing has become established as a sport, drawing a competitive environment from around the world. The term "indoor rower" also refers to a participant in this sport.
World Rowing, also known as the World Rowing Federation, is the international governing body for rowing. Its current president is Jean-Christophe Rolland who succeeded Denis Oswald at a ceremony held in Lucerne in July 2014.
The CRASH-B Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships was the world championship for indoor rowing, raced over a distance of 2,000m. The regatta is sponsored by Concept2, and raced on their C2 rowers. Originally held in Harvard's Newell Boathouse, the regatta moved in turn to the Malkin Athletic Center, the Radcliff Quadrangle Athletic Center, MIT's Rockwell Cage, Harvard's Indoor Track Facility, the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, Boston University's Agganis Arena, and in 2019, to the Boston University Track and Tennis Center. The regatta is held in late February each year.
Graham Benton is a British indoor rower. He has won the British Rowing Indoor Championships 15 times and the World Indoor Rowing Championships six. While Benton is primarily an indoor rower, he did row on the water, representing England and competing at several Henley Royal Regattas.

Sofia Asoumanaki is a Greek rower. She was born in Athens, Greece, and was involved in swimming between the ages of 2.5 until 16. During that time, she competed many times on the national level. At the age of 16, she decided to engage herself in rowing. Within her first year in the sport, she achieved fourth place at the World Rowing Junior Championships, but also received distinctions and medals in National, Balkan, European, and World Championships. In September 2015, she qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where she represented Greece, along with Katerina Nikolaidou, in the double sculls, finishing in fourth place. She also won a silver medal in the double sculls at the 2015 World Rowing Championships and in the single sculls at the 2015 World Rowing Junior Championships. Asoumanaki holds the World Indoor Rowing record for 2,000 m in the female heavyweight 17–18 age category. After the 2016 Summer Olympics, she studied at the University of Washington.
Wilma Anna Helena Murto is a Finnish pole vaulter. She won the gold medal at the 2022 European Athletics Championships in Munich with a jump of 4.85 m, equalling the championships record and setting a new Finnish record. Murto also claimed victory at the 2023 European Indoor Championships, making her the first Finnish woman in history to win gold at these championships.
Natalia Kaczmarek is a Polish athlete sprinter who specialises in the 400 metres. She won the silver medal in the event at the 2022 European Championships. Kaczmarek earned several global medals as part of 4 x 400 m relays, including gold in the mixed event and silver in the women's event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Pavel Antonovich Shurmei is a Belarusian rower who competed at two Olympic Games and holds multiple world records on the Concept2 indoor rowing machine. He is one of the Belarusian volunteers of the Kastuś Kalinoŭski Battalion. In March 2023, it became known that a criminal case was opened in Belarus against Pavel Shurmey in absentia.
Oliver Zeidler is a German rower and former swimmer. He is the reigning world champion in the men's single sculls, which he first won at the 2019 World Rowing Championships and defended in 2022 and 2023. He is the current World Games champion in indoor rowing in the open men's 2000 m class.
Aliaksandr Kazubouski is a Belarusian rower. He competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Olympics. Won the world title in 2012 World Rowing Championships in Plodviv, Bulgaria. Won the European Title in 2010 European Rowing Championships in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal. In 2011 Kazubouski, as part of the team Dynamo Brest, competed in the Stewards' Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta.
