Johanna ter Steege (born 10 May 1961) is a Dutch actress.
She won the European Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her movie debut in The Vanishing (1988). [1] Among her other films are Robert Altman's Vincent & Theo (1990), István Szabó's Meeting Venus (1991) and Sweet Emma, Dear Böbe (1992), Bernard Rose's Immortal Beloved (1994), and Bruce Beresford's Paradise Road (1997).
In 1993, she was a member of the jury at the 43rd Berlin International Film Festival [2] and was awarded with the Berlinale Camera. [3]
In 1994, after Julia Roberts and Uma Thurman declined, Stanley Kubrick cast her for his adaptation of Louis Begley's novel Wartime Lies . Kubrick abandoned the project after it became clear that Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List would be released first. [4]

The Teddy Award is an international film award for films with LGBT topics, presented by an independent jury as an official award of the Berlin International Film Festival. Wartime Lies is a semi-autobiographical novel by Louis Begley first published in 1991. Set in Poland during the years of the Nazi occupation, it is about two members of an upper middle class Jewish family, a young woman and her nephew, who avoid persecution as Jews by assuming Catholic identities. Time and again the boy, who narrates the story from some remote point in time, reminisces about how he learned to lie at an early age in order to survive. Thus, his whole adult life is founded on the "wartime lies" of his childhood.

The Golden Bear was awarded to American-Taiwanese film The Wedding Banquet directed by Ang Lee and Chinese film Xiāng hún nǚ directed by Xie Fei. The retrospective dedicated to CinemaScope was shown at the festival.

The Golden Bear was awarded to French-British film Intimacy directed by Patrice Chéreau. The retrospective dedicated to German-Austrian filmmaker, screenwriter Fritz Lang was shown at the festival.
