The Johansen CAJO 59 was a Danish twin-engined amphibious flying boat. Built in the late 1960s, it achieved certification but did not go into production.

Design and development

The CAJO 59 was designed by Carl Johansen (hence the name) as a general purpose 3-4 seat amphibious flying boat. It was a high-gull winged twin-engine monoplane with a wooden structure, mostly wooden skinned, apart from glass fibre/foam sandwich panels in the fuselage and fabric covered control surfaces. The wings inboard of the engines were built around two spars and had high dihedral (8.8°), which raised the engines well above the water. Outboard of the engines the wings had a single spar and were without dihedral. They carried full span slotted flaps and ailerons which were lowered when the flaps were fully extended. [1]

The fuselage was flat sided with rounded decking, with the cabin under the wings. Its conventional flying boat V-shaped planing bottom had a change of curvature near midpoint but no discrete step. The vertical tail was straight-tapered, the rudder fitted with a trim tab. The cantilever variable incidence tailplane, with elevators, was mounted above the fuselage at about one third fin height. The CAJO 59 was powered by two 65 hp (49 kW) Walter Mikron III inverted inline engines. Two fixed floats, mounted well outboard on single struts, stabilised flights off water. It had a manually retractable tricycle wheeled undercarriage, with main legs mounted on the fuselage and retracting into it above the waterline. [1]

The first flight was made from water on 25 July 1967 and the first from land on 17 April 1968. Certification facilities were lacking in Denmark, so the CAJO 59 was taken to Germany and flew as D-GDFH during 1970. [1] [2]

The Boeing XPB was an American twin-engined biplane long-range patrol flying boat of the 1920s. A single example was built for the United States Navy.

The Lemberger LD20b was a single-engine cantilever biplane designed to be easily towable behind a car. Built in Germany in 1971, it made several flights but did not enter production.

The Schreder HP-22 was an American mid-wing, amphibious flying boat, cruciform tailed, two seat motor glider project that was designed by Richard Schreder. None were ever completed or flown.

Timm T-840

The Timm T-840 was a twin engine, high wing passenger aircraft designed and flown in the United States in 1938. Equipped with a tricycle undercarriage and low speed aerodynamic devices, it could be configured to carry between six and ten passengers. Only one was built.

SNCASE SE-2300

The Sud-Est SE-2300 or S.N.C.A.S.E. SE-2300 was a two/three seat low wing, single engine touring aircraft, built just after World War II in France. The SE-2310 was a tricycle undercarriage variant. Neither type went into production.

Potez-CAMS 160

The Potez-CAMS 160 was a one-off 5/13 scale flight model built in France, first flown in the summer of 1938 to test aerodynamic and hydrodynamic qualities of the Potez-CAMS 161 airliner and mail carrier, which was too large for detailed modelling in existing wind tunnels.

Speedtwin E2E Comet 1

The Möller Stomo 3 was a small, low-powered but very aerodynamically-clean light aircraft, first flown in Germany in 1939. It set two speed over distance records for aircraft with engines of less than 2 l (120 cu in) capacity soon after its first flight.

Lioré et Olivier LeO H-23

The Lioré et Olivier LeO H-23 was a French military flying boat, primarily intended for coastal reconnaissance, though able to carry a small bomb load. Only one was built.

Medwecki and Nowakowski M.N.5

The Medwecki and Nowakowski M.N.5 was an economical Polish trainer aircraft initially aimed at the club market, though there was also some military interest. It performed well but lacked a constructor after Samolot became insolvent in 1930, so only one was completed.

The Orliński RO-7 Orlik (Eaglet) was a prize-winning Polish home-built aircraft, first flown in 1987. It was restored to flight, with improvements, in 2003.
