Eastern Michigan University, is a public research university in Ypsilanti, Michigan, United States. The university was founded in 1849 as Michigan State Normal School. Today, the university is governed by an eight-member board of regents whose members are appointed by the governor of Michigan for eight-year terms. The school belongs to the Mid-American Conference and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Since 1991 EMU athletes have been known as "Eagles" and the school mascot, Swoop, was officially adopted by the university three years later. It is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity".

The 2011 Eastern Michigan Eagles football team represented Eastern Michigan University during the 2011 NCAA Division I FBS football season. Owen building in downtown Ypsilanti, which has been its site since 1991. Students are able to take a shuttle to the College of Business, which runs in a 20-minute loop around campus.

Schatzel was previously dean of the college of business at University of Michigan–Dearborn.
John Malhelm Berry Sill was American diplomat and educator who served as the United States Counsel-General to Korea, president of Michigan State Normal College, and superintendent of Detroit Public Schools. He also served as a regent of the University of Michigan.
