John Aiken (born April 30, 1982) [1] is an American basketball coach who currently serves as an assistant coach for the UT Martin Skyhawks. [2] He previously served as the head men's basketball coach at McNeese State. [3]

Coaching career

Aiken began his coaching career in his native Maine assisting at Greater Portland Christian School and Cheverus High School, the latter under former Boston University men's basketball coach Bob Brown, the father of Brett Brown. [4] [5] He'd get his start in the collegiate ranks as an assistant coach at the University of New England before becoming an assistant coach at Belhaven. After serving in the assistant role for four seasons, Aiken was elevated to head coach where he guided the Blazers to a 30–33 record in two seasons. [6]

Moving into the Division I ranks, Aiken joined Heath Schroyer's staff at UT Martin, and followed it up with an assistant coaching stint at Nicholls State. [7] He'd reunite with Schroyer at McNeese State as an assistant coach, and on March 11, 2021, Aiken would be elevated to head coach after Schroyer took on the position of athletic director full time. [8] [9] He was fired on March 8, 2023. [10]

The 2015–16 UT Martin Skyhawks men's basketball team represented the University of Tennessee at Martin during the 2015–16 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Skyhawks, led by second year head coach Heath Schroyer, played their home games at Skyhawk Arena and were members of the West Division of the Ohio Valley Conference. They finished the season 20–15, 10–6 in OVC play to share the West Division championship with Murray State. They defeated Morehead State to advance to the championship game of the OVC tournament where they lost to Austin Peay. The 2016–17 Nicholls State Colonels men's basketball team represented Nicholls State University during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Colonels, led by first-year head coach Richie Riley, played their home games at Stopher Gym in Thibodaux, Louisiana as members of the Southland Conference. They finished the season 14–17, 7–11 in Southland play to finish in a five-way tie for eighth place. They failed to qualify for the Southland tournament. Anthony W. Stewart was an American college basketball coach. His last position was as head coach of the UT Martin Skyhawks. Since Stewart joined the Skyhawk program as the associate head coach under Heath Schroyer in 2014, the team won 94 games, the most in a six-year time period since they became part of Division I. Stewart was responsible of the team's three straight 20-win campaigns from 2014–2017, a first for the UT team. Also in that span, the Skyhawks won five postseason games and was the only Ohio Valley Conference school to win at least one postseason game in each of the last three seasons. Coach Stewart had gone on to coach over 15 professional players during his coaching career.

The Cowboys were led by 1st-year head coach Heath Schroyer and played their home games at the new on-campus Health and Human Performance Education Complex in Lake Charles, Louisiana as members of the Southland Conference.

The 2018–19 Southland Conference men's basketball season, the conference's 56th, began with practices in October 2018, followed by the start of the 2018–19 NCAA Division I men's basketball season on November 6, 2018. Conference play began on January 2, 2019 concluding on March 9, 2019. The Sam Houston State Bearkats won the regular season championship with a conference record of 16–2. The 2019 Southland Conference men's basketball tournament was held in Katy, Texas at the Merrell Center from March 13–17, 2019. The 2nd seeded Abilene Christian Wildcats won the conference tournament championship and received the conference automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Two other teams also received bids to post season tournaments. Conference regular season champion, Sam Houston State, received the conference automatic bid to the NIT tournament. New Orleans received a bid to the CIT tournament.

The 2019–20 UT Martin Skyhawks men's basketball team represented the University of Tennessee at Martin during the 2019–20 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Skyhawks, led by fourth-year head coach Anthony Stewart, played their home games at Skyhawk Arena as members of the Ohio Valley Conference. They finished the season 9–20, 5–13 in OVC play to finish in a tie for 10th place. They failed to qualify for the OVC tournament.
