Nassau County is a suburban county located immediately to the east of New York City. As of the 2020 United States census, Nassau County's population was 1,395,774, making it the sixth-most populous county in the State of New York, and reflecting an increase of 56,242 (+4.2%) from the 1,339,532 residents enumerated at the 2010 census. Its county seat is Mineola, while the county's largest town is Hempstead. The county is part of the Long Island region of the state, lying in its southeastern portion along with the remainder of the island.

The term refers to the trains serving Montauk Branch stations from Valley Stream east to Babylon; in other words, the Babylon Branch is a rail service rather than an actual track. The electrification of the Montauk Branch ends east of the Babylon station, so the Babylon Branch is mostly served by electric trains.

The district currently includes the communities of Wantagh, Merrick, Bellmore, Massapequa Park, Freeport, Roosevelt, Seaford, Amityville, and Copiague, as well as parts of Massapequa, Farmingdale, Baldwin, Lindenhurst, West Babylon, Wheatley Heights, and Wyandanch. Senator Fuschillo resigned from the New York State Senate on December 31, 2013 to serve as the President and CEO of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.

Although the Republican Party increased its majority in the Senate, unified Republican control of Congress and the White House was brought to an end when the Democratic Party won control of the House of Representatives in what was widely characterized as a "blue wave" election as Democrats also gained governorships and other state offices, and state legislative chambers as well.

A Republican, he was first elected in 2014, he served as Chairman of the Consumer Protection Committee, and on the Codes, Higher Education, Insurance, Judiciary, Labor, Libraries, and Crime Victims, Crime and Correction committees and on the Heroin Task Force.

Christine Pellegrino is a former member of the New York State Assembly from the 9th District. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Prior to her election, Pellegrino was a teacher for 25 years, spending most of her career teaching in Baldwin Public Schools. She got her start in political activism and involvement as an educator in NYSUT and in grassroots education movements. Pellegrino ran as the 2020 Democratic nominee for the 4th District of the New York Senate.
