John Thomas Doody Jr. (born January 15, 1945) is an American politician who served as a Republican member of the Illinois House of Representatives from the 37th district from September 1995 until January 1997 and later a Judge of the Cook County Circuit Court.

Biography

Doody was born January 15, 1945, in Evergreen Park, Illinois. He attended Illinois State University and St. Procopius College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from the latter institution. Doody later earned a Juris Doctor from John Marshall Law School. Doody was a soldier in the United States Army and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. [1] Doody was, for a time, the Mayor of Homewood, Illinois. [1] [2]

Doody was elected a township trustee of Bloom Township in 1981, a village trustee for Homewood in 1983, and Village President of Homewood in 1991. [3]

Doody was appointed to the Illinois House of Representatives and sworn into office on September 11, 1995, to succeed Ed Zabrocki, the Mayor of Tinley Park, Illinois, who had been elected in the 1994 elections. [2] [1] He was defeated by Democratic candidate Kevin McCarthy in the 1996 general election. [4] Doody explored challenging McCarthy in the 1998 election, but opted out in favor of Maureen O'Hara who was supported by Minority Leader Lee Daniels. [5]

After his 1996 loss, he became a member of the Homewood Public Library Board. [3] In 2002, he became a Circuit Court Judge, a position he would hold until his retirement in 2013. [3]

Born in Chicago, Illinois. Sheehy attended Moraine Valley Community College and graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science. After graduating from Worsham, he went to work for his father at Sheehy Funeral Homes. He is an army veteran of the Vietnam War era. In 1992, Sheehy faced Carl James Vandenberg, who defeated fellow Republican and appointed incumbent Manny Hoffman of Homewood. Sheehy won the Republican leaning district by 239 votes. While a member of the Illinois House, he served on the following committees; Aging; Appropriations-Human Services; Elections & State Government; Elementary & Secondary Education; Registration & Regulation. He was defeated for reelection by Ed Zabrocki, the Mayor of Tinley Park, Illinois, by 539 votes.

Edward J. "Ed" Zabrocki is a politician who served as the Mayor of Tinley Park, Illinois from May 1981 until his resignation in June 2016. During his mayoral tenure, he briefly served as a Republican member of the Illinois House of Representatives in 1995. After his resignation from the Illinois House of Representatives, local Republicans appointed John Doody, the Mayor of Homewood, Illinois to replace him. While Mayor, Zabrocki also taught at Brother Rice High School in the City of Chicago from 1965 until 2005. At Brother Rice he taught English, including a stint as the English Department Chair, and was a guidance counselor. In 2016, Zabrocki resigned as Mayor for health and family reasons. In 2017, Zabrocki was appointed by Larry Walsh, Sr., the Will County Executive, to the Will County Board of Health.
