The Louisville Cardinals are the NCAA athletic teams representing the University of Louisville. The Cardinals teams play in the Atlantic Coast Conference, beginning in the 2014 season. While playing in the Big East Conference from 2005 through 2013, the Cardinals captured 17 regular season Big East titles and 33 Big East Tournament titles totaling 50 Big East Championships across all sports. On November 28, 2012, Louisville received and accepted an invitation to join the Atlantic Coast Conference and became a participating member in all sports in 2014. In 2016, Lamar Jackson won the school its first Heisman Trophy.
Daniel Ricardo Manning is an American college basketball coach and former professional player who is the Associate Head Mens Basketball Coach at the University of Louisville. Manning played high school basketball at Walter Hines Page High School in Greensboro, North Carolina, as well as Lawrence High School in Lawrence, Kansas. He played college basketball for the Kansas Jayhawks, and played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for 14 years. After retiring from professional basketball Manning became an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Kansas. He won the national championship with the Jayhawks in 1988 as a player, and again as an assistant in 2008. He is the all-time leading scorer in Kansas basketball history with 2,951 points. The next closest player to his point total is Nick Collison, who is 854 points behind Manning.
Denzel Edwin "Denny" Crum is an American former men's college basketball coach at the University of Louisville from 1971 to 2001, compiling a 675–295 (.696) record. He guided the Cardinals to two NCAA championships and six Final Fours. Honored in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame since 1994, Crum is one of the major figures in the history of sports in Kentucky and in college basketball in general.

Before being hired by Detroit, Beilein served as the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Prior to joining the Cavaliers, he coached the Michigan Wolverines (2007–2019), West Virginia Mountaineers (2002–2007), Richmond Spiders (1997–2002), Canisius Golden Griffins (1992–1997) in NCAA Division I as well as Le Moyne College (1983–1992), Nazareth College (1982–1983) and Erie Community College (1978–1982). Beilein has won 754 career games at four-year universities and 829 games altogether, including those at the junior college level. Beilein’s overall career wins counting the time spent in Cleveland is 843 games.

Bernard "Peck" Hickman was an American basketball player and coach. As head coach he led the Louisville Cardinals to the 1948 NAIB Championship, the 1956 NIT Championship and the school's first NCAA final Four in 1959. He never had a losing season in 23 years as head coach, finishing with a 443-183 overall record, a .708 winning percentage that ranks him among the top 45 NCAA Division I coaches of all time.

Cloyd V. "Big Red" Money was an American football, basketball, and baseball coach and college athletic administrator. He served as the head football coach at Hanover College (1927–1931), the University of Louisville (1932), Shurtleff College (1936–1939), Ferris Institute—now known as Ferris State University (1940–1941), and Northern Michigan University (1947–1955). Money was also the head basketball coach at Hanover (1927–1932), Louisville (1932–1936), Ferris (1940–1942), and Northern Michigan (1947–1956), amassing a career college basketball record of 180–164. In addition, he coached baseball at Louisville from 1933 to 1936, tallying a mark of 18–15.

The Xavier Musketeers men's basketball team represents Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. The school's team currently competes in the Big East Conference, and are coached by Sean Miller. Xavier has appeared in the NCAA tournament 28 times, 16 times in the 18 tournaments between 2001 and 2018. On March 11, 2018, Xavier earned its first ever No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Xavier is also a two-time winner of the NIT, with their most recent championship coming in 2022.

Mike Pegues is an American men's basketball coach who is currently an assistant for the Butler University men's basketball team. He previously served as an assistant and then interim head coach for the University of Louisville from 2018–2022. He is also known for his playing career at Delaware, where he was a three-time first-team All-America East Conference selection, as well as the league's player of the year in 1998–99.
Greg Scruggs is an assistant defensive line coach for the New York Jets. Most recently he was the defensive line coach for Cincinnati Bearcats football. Scruggs is a former American football defensive end/tight end. He was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He played college football at Louisville.
Luther J. Riley is an American basketball coach. He is the former head coach for Alcorn State University. Before being coach of Alcorn State, he was the coach John W. Provine High School where he won five state championships in eleven seasons.
Travis Andrew Steele is an American college basketball coach, and current head basketball coach at Miami University (OH). He recently served as the head coach at Xavier.
