Major General John Peter William Friedberger, CB , CBE (born 27 May 1937) is a former British Army officer who served as Commander British Forces Cyprus.

Military career

Educated at Red House School in York and Wellington College, Friedberger was commissioned into the 10th Royal Hussars in 1956. [1] He became commanding officer of the Royal Hussars in 1975, Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces in 1982 and Assistant Chief of Staff at Northern Army Group in 1986. [1] He went on to be Commander British Forces Cyprus and Administrator of the Sovereign Base Areas in 1988 before retiring in 1990. [2]

In retirement Friedberger became Chairman of the British Helicopter Advisory Board. [1]

British Forces Cyprus Military unit

British Forces Cyprus (BFC) is the name given to the British Armed Forces stationed in the UK Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia on the island of Cyprus and at a number of related 'retained sites' in the Republic of Cyprus. The United Kingdom retains a military presence on the island in order to keep a strategic location at the eastern end of the Mediterranean, for use as a staging point for forces sent to locations in the Middle East and Asia. BFC is a tri-service command, with all three services based on the island reporting to it.

The Royal Hussars was a cavalry regiment of the British Army. It was formed by the amalgamation of the 10th Royal Hussars and the 11th Hussars in 1969 and it amalgamated with the 14th/20th King's Hussars to form the King's Royal Hussars in 1992.

Kodandera Subayya Thimayya Indian Chief of Army staff

General Kodendera Subayya Thimayya (1906-1965), was a distinguished soldier of the Indian Army who served as Chief of Army Staff from 1957 to 1961 in the crucial years leading up to the conflict with China in 1962. Gen. Thimayya was the only Indian to command an Infantry brigade in battle during the Second World War and is regarded as the most distinguished combat officer the Indian Army has produced. After the Korean War, Thimayya headed a United Nations unit dealing with the repatriation of prisoners of war. After his retirement from the Army, he was appointed Commander of the United Nations Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus from July 1964 to December 1965 and died in Cyprus while on active duty on 18 December 1965.
