John G. Wickser (c. 1858 – July 1, 1928 Buffalo, Erie County, New York) was an American businessman and politician.

Buffalo is the second largest city in the U.S. state of New York and the largest city in Western New York. As of 2017, the population was 258,612. The city is the county seat of Erie County and a major gateway for commerce and travel across the Canada–United States border, forming part of the bi-national Buffalo Niagara Region.

Erie County is a highly populated county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2010 census, the population was 919,040. The county seat is Buffalo. The county's name comes from Lake Erie. It was named by European colonists for the regional Iroquoian language-speaking Erie tribe of Native Americans, who lived south and east of the lake before 1654.

Life

He was a nephew of Mayor of Buffalo Philip Becker. He was President of the Buffalo German Insurance Company and the Buffalo Commercial Insurance Company.

Philip Becker (1830–1898) was Mayor of the City of Buffalo, New York, serving 1876–1877 and 1886–1889. He was born in Oberotterbach, Bavaria, Germany, on April 25, 1830. He graduated from college in Germany at sixteen years of age. In 1847, Philip and his older brother were provided the means to pay the fare to America and he settled in Buffalo, where his aunt and uncle lived. In 1852, he married Sarah Goetz. He entered the retail and wholesale grocery business. Becker was instrumental in organizing the German Insurance Company in 1867 and was President of the company from 1869 until his death.

As a Republican, he was New York State Treasurer from 1903 to 1904, elected at the New York state election, 1902. As Treasurer, he was a member of the Board of Parole which in 1904 denied number racketeer Albert J. Adams's application for parole.

The New York State Treasurer was a state cabinet officer in the State of New York between 1776 and 1926. During the re-organization of the state government under Governor Al Smith, the office was abolished and its responsibilities transferred to the new Department of Audit and Control headed to the New York State Comptroller.

Albert James Adams, known as "The Policy King" and the "Meanest Man in New York," was an American racketeer. He ran the numbers game in New York City from around 1890 to around 1905.
