John Sterling Howe (born August 26,1963) is a Minnesota politician and former Republican member of the Minnesota Senate who represented District 28,which included portions of Goodhue,Wabasha,and Winona counties in southeastern Minnesota.
Howe attended St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud,earning his B.A. in Criminal Justice. He has worked as a laborer,corrections officer and Sears store owner. Howe was a member of the Goodhue County Social Services Board,and was mayor of Red Wing from 2008 until becoming a senator in 2011. He also served on the Minnesota Clean Water Council,appointed by Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty. [2] He is also the owner of Howe Properties,LLC,based in Red Wing. [3]
Howe was first elected to the Senate in 2010. He was a member of the Energy,Utilities and Telecommunications,the Jobs and Economic Growth,the Taxes,and the Transportation committees. His special legislative concerns were energy and the environment. [4] Howe failed in his 2012 bid for re-election,losing to Red Wing DFLer Matt Schmit. Howe attributed his loss to fliers that featured a mug shot of his rival after being arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. [5]
Howe unsuccessfully sought the Republican endorsement to be Minnesota Secretary of State in 2014. He ran again for Minnesota Secretary of State as the Republican nominee in 2018.
Steven A. Sviggum is a Minnesota politician,a member of the University of Minnesota Board of Regents,and an executive assistant to and communications director for the Republican caucus in the Minnesota Senate. A former Speaker and member of the Minnesota House of Representatives,Sviggum represented District 28B in the southeastern part of the state. Paul Koering is a Minnesota politician who serves on the County Board of Crow Wing County,Minnesota. He is a former member of the Minnesota Senate from Fort Ripley. A Republican,he represented District 12,which includes all or portions of Crow Wing and Morrison counties,including the city of Brainerd. A liquor store owner,funeral car service owner,and small farmer,he served two terms,but was defeated by former Rep. Paul Gazelka in the August 10,2010,Republican primary election. He was elected to the Crow Wing County Board in 2012 and re-elected unopposed in 2016;he represents the first district which contains the southern portion of Crow Wing County,including Fort Ripley,Roosevelt Township,Oak Lawn Township and the extreme northeast portion of the city of Brainerd.
John J. Marty is a member of the Minnesota Senate,representing District 40,which includes parts of Ramsey County in the northern Twin Cities metropolitan area. As a young state senator,he ran for governor of Minnesota in 1994. He won the DFL nomination and the Democratic primary but lost the general election to the incumbent governor,Arne Carlson. Marty ran for governor again in 2010,but withdrew from the race after failing to win his party's endorsement.
Steve Murphy is a Minnesota politician and a former member of the Minnesota Senate who represented District 28,which includes portions of Goodhue,Wabasha and Winona counties in the southeastern part of the state. A Democrat,he was first elected in 1992,representing the old District 29 until redistricting in 2002. He was re-elected in 1996,2000,2002 and 2006. On January 22,2010,he announced that he would not seek a sixth term.
