SirJohn Kaputin,CMG is a Papua New Guinean athlete and politician.
Kaputin was born on 11 July 1941 on Matupit Island,East New Britain Province. After his primary schooling in the province,he proceeded onto Rockhampton Boys Grammar School in Queensland,Australia (1956-1959) where he completed his secondary school.
He represented Papua and New Guinea as a sprinter at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. [1]
He then qualified for a scholarship to study at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu (1966 –1968),after which returned home to complete his studies at the University of Papua New Guinea in 1969.
Kaputin became an influential member and leader of the Mataungan Association in Rabaul. [2] The association was a local Tolai grouping that was angered by the alienation of land by Germans and Australian plantation owners.
Armed with the leadership skills he had honed,he contested and easily won the 1972 General Elections and became the member for Rabaul Open for Papua New Guinea's National Parliament. Kaputin was appointed Minister of Finance under the Chan/Okuk Government in 1980. [3] Whilst Minister for Finance,Kaputin was instrumental in crafting important legislation to establish Papua New Guinea's private company employees retirement fund,the National Provident Fund,which later became the National Superannuation Fund of Papua New Guinea NASFUND. [4] Kwila Insurance was also introduced under Kaputin.
Kaputin was the foreign minister of Papua New Guinea from 1992 until 1994 and from December 1999 until 2000. He is a co-founder of the Melanesian Alliance Party. He was named Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1983 and Knight Bachelor in 1997.
In March 2005,he took office as secretary-general of the African,Caribbean and Pacific Group of States,holding the position until 2010.
In December 2011,Kaputin,alongside Edward Laboran,became the inaugural inductees into the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee Sporting Hall of Fame. [5]
The politics of Papua New Guinea takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic multi-party system,whereby the prime minister is the head of government. Papua New Guinea is an independent Commonwealth realm,with the monarch serving as head of state and a governor-general,nominated by the National Parliament,serving as their representative. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and parliament.

During his time as a Member of Parliament (MP),he served as the Minister for Justice (1988–1992) in the government led by the then Prime Minister Rabbie Namaliu;Agriculture Minister (1992–1994) under the leadership of Prime Minister Sir Julius Chan led government;and Leader of the Opposition from July 1997 to 1999,and Speaker of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea,until he lost his seat to the then Wewak MP Kimson Kare during the 2002 elections. He was displaced as a minister in the Chan government for failing to vote in favour of constitutional reforms in the provincial system of government.
Sir Michael Thomas Somare was a Papua New Guinean politician. Widely called the "father of the nation",he was the first Prime Minister after independence. At the time of his death,Somare was also the longest-serving prime minister,having been in office for 17 years over three separate terms:from 1975 to 1980;from 1982 to 1985;and from 2002 to 2011. His political career spanned from 1968 until his retirement in 2017. Besides serving as PM,he was minister of foreign affairs,leader of the opposition and governor of East Sepik Province.

James Marape is a Papua New Guinean politician who has served as the prime minister of Papua New Guinea since May 2019. He has been a member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea since July 2007,representing the electorate of Tari-Pori Open in Hela Province in the New Guinea Highlands. He has held Cabinet Posts as Minister of Education (2008–2011),Minister of Finance (2012–2019),and Minister of Foreign Affairs (2023–present). Marape entered the 2022 elections under the banner of the Pangu Party and won more seats than any other party. He was therefore entitled to form the government. His new government was elected unopposed by the new parliament.
Michael John Manning OBE was an Australian-born Papua New Guinean anti-corruption activist and economist. Manning served as the second Chairman of Transparency International PNG (TIPNG),one of Papua New Guinea's largest organizations dedicated to eradicating corruption,from 2003 until 2008. He was a naturalized citizen of Papua New Guinea.
