John L. Wainwright

John L. Wainwright is a Hampshire-born writer and historian researching the Spanish Civil War and International Brigades volunteers.

Wainwright is interested in social history which places emphasis on the lives of people. In his 2012 book The Last to Fall: the Life and Letters of Ivor Hickman, he reproduces the love letters sent by a young International Brigades Military Observer (who was also a former student of Ludwig Wittgenstein) in the months leading up to his death in the final hours of fighting in Spain, 1938. Among those interviewed for his analysis were Sam Lesser [1] and David Marshall. [2]

The International Brigades were military units set up by the Communist International to assist the Popular Front government of the Second Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War. The organization existed for two years, from 1936 until 1938. The Westmorland Gazette is a weekly newspaper published in Kendal, England, covering "South Lakeland and surrounding areas", including Barrow and North Lancashire. Its name refers to the historic county of Westmorland. The paper is now owned by the Newsquest group, forming part of Westmorland Gazette Newspapers, which includes the weekly freesheet South Lakes Citizen and other titles. It has an office in Ulverston in addition to its Kendal base. The circulation is about 7,500. It changed from broadsheet to compact format in August 2009. Lesser was one of the last surviving British veterans of the Spanish Civil War, and went on to serve as chair of the International Brigade Memorial Trust (IBMT), and write for the Daily Worker and its successor, the Morning Star.

The statue of Winston Churchill in Woodford, London, is a bronze sculpture of the British statesman, created by David McFall in 1958–9. The statue commemorates Churchill's role as the member for the parliamentary constituency of Woodford. Churchill was elected to the Epping seat in 1924 and held it until 1945 when the new constituency of Woodford was created. Churchill then held this seat until his retirement in 1964. The statue is a Grade II listed structure.

Sam Wainwright is a Welsh rugby union player who plays as a prop for United Rugby Championship club the Scarlets. He is a Wales international, and has also appeared for the U20 team.
