John M. Drew

John M. Drew (born May 31, 1973) is the current Tax Collector of Nassau County, Florida. [1] He was first appointed [2] Tax Collector by Governor Jeb Bush in May 2006. [3] He was elected to the office [4] later that year.

Drew oversees property tax collection, the Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles, the Division of Driver Licenses, and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission. [5] He has also volunteered with veterans' groups, education efforts, the arts [6] and Micah's Place, the first Nassau County shelter for victims of domestic violence.

Background

Early life and family

John M. Drew was born in Nassau County, Florida, to schoolteacher Mary Tom Drew and mill worker Joe Drew. John is married to Dr. Catherine Hardee Drew, PhD, clinical psychologist and C.E.O. of Florida Psychological Associates. They have one son, Joseph Drew. [7] John and Joseph performed together in the musicals "Scrooge" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" at Amelia Musical Playhouse. [6]

John M. Drew graduated from Fernandina Beach High School after founding the "Nassau County Teen-Age Republicans. [5] "

In addition to serving on the Jacksonville University's Alumni Board of Governors, he was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus. [9] He was also the youngest-ever graduate of their E.M.B.A. program.

Career

Tax collector

As tax collector, John M. Drew has won multiple Legacy Awards – a designation of excellence from the Florida Tax Collectors Association. [10] Nassau County was the first Tax Collector's Office to issue concealed weapons permit renewals. He also created a new program enabling Florida tax collectors to provide citizens with duplicate birth certificates – a program now in place across the state.

On a national level, Drew is a member of the Legislative Committee of the National Association of County Collectors, Treasurers and Finance Officers, an affiliate of the only national organization that represents county governments in the United States. [15]

Drew was previously the Vice Chairman of the Nassau County Republican Party, and has served as its Precinct Committeeman since 2000. [5]

Community service

Drew helped to found Micah's Place, [16] a facility in Nassau County for domestic violence victims who had nowhere to go until the creation of Micah's Place. He went on to serve seven years on their Board.

Drew serves on the board of the Nassau Education Foundation, [17] which provides classroom grants to public schools and recognizes outstanding teachers and students.

Drew is the only Honorary Member of both the Fraternal Order of Police and the International Association of Fire Fighters in Nassau County.

David Levy Yulee was an American politician and attorney. Born on the island of St. Thomas, then under British control, he was of Sephardic Jewish ancestry: His father was a Sephardi from Morocco, and his mother, also of Sephardi descent, was born in Sint Eustatius and raised in St. Thomas. The family moved to Florida when he was a child, and he grew up there on their extensive lands. He later served as Florida's territorial delegate to Congress. Yulee was the first person of Jewish ancestry to be elected and serve as a United States senator, serving 1845–1851 and again 1855–1861. He founded the Florida Railroad Company and served as president of several other companies, earning the nickname of "Father of Florida Railroads." The Fernandina Beach Historic District was included on the National Register of Historic Places on July 20, 1973 and encompasses approximately 1,500 acres, bounded by North 9th Street, Broome, Ash, South 5th Street, Date, and South 8th Street. On April 20, 1987, the National Register listing was expanded to include an additional 970 acres (3.9 km²), bounded by Sixth, Broome, North 3rd, & Escambia Streets; Seventh & Date Streets, and Ash. Approximately 300 buildings are included in this district.

He served as Clerk of the City of Fernandina, chaired the Fernandina Library Association when it was established in 1891, and was a lay reader at the Santa Fe Lake, Florida, Episcopal congregation.

Democrat Nikki Fried narrowly defeated Republican Matt Caldwell.
