John Victor McSorley (born 1941), is a male former athlete who competed for England.

Athletics career

He represented England in the hammer, javelin and shot put at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth, Western Australia. [1]

Eight years later he won silver medal in the javelin at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland. [2]

Association with Reg Spiers

In 1964, fellow javelin thrower Reg Spiers, air-freighted himself from England to Australia to avoid paying for the flight. [3] John McSorley created the box for his friend and when he did not hear from Spiers, he became worried and contacted the press about the incident. McSorely's wife and son later wrote a book discussing this incident. [4]

The Commonwealth Games is an international multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The event was first held in 1930, and, with the exception of 1942 and 1946, has taken place every four years since then. He was an international athlete from 1965 to 1978 and the British record holder for 4 years.

1962 Commonwealth Paraplegic Games

The First Commonwealth Paraplegic Games were held in Perth, Western Australia from 10 to 17 November 1962. These Games preceded the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games which were held in Perth from 22 November to 1 December of that year. The Commonwealth Paraplegic Games were conceived by Dr George Bedbrook after Perth won the right to host the Commonwealth Games. Great support was received from the Royal Perth Hospital, a leading spinal rehabilitation centre in Australia.

At the 1962 Commonwealth Paraplegic Games in Perth, Western Australia eighty nine athletes from nine countries competed in fourteen events.

He is a former British record holder and was the first British man to throw the javelin beyond eighty metres. His personal best is 81.92 m.

Colin George Smith was a British former track and field athlete who specialised in the javelin throw. He was the gold medallist in the event at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, setting a games record mark of 71.29 m to win the title. He returned to defend his title in 1962 and was much improved with a lifetime best throw of 77.94 m, but he was beaten into the silver medal position by Australia's Alf Mitchell.

1966 Commonwealth Paraplegic Games

The second Commonwealth Paraplegic Games were held in Kingston, Jamaica from 14 to 20 August 1966. There were 133 athletes from 10 countries. The Games were opened by Prince Philip.
