John Messara is an Australian thoroughbred horse breeder and owner who served from 2011 to 2016 as the chairman of Racing New South Wales, [1] a body established under the Thoroughbred Racing Act 1996 to control and regulate the NSW Thoroughbred Racing Industry. He was elected deputy chairman of the Australian Racing Board in June 2012, [2] and served as chairman from January 2014 to December 2016. [3] Messara has also been a Member of the Australian Pattern Committee. [4] Messara formerly chaired the boards of Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (2007–2008) [5] and Aushorse Marketing (2001–2008) [6]

Personal life

John Messara was born in Alexandria, Egypt and emigrated in 1958 to Sydney, Australia where he was educated at St Ignatius College, and the University of New South Wales. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and is a certified public accountant. He married his wife Kristine in 1973 and they have four adult children: Louise, Paul, Michael and Susanne.

Career

Messara began his career with Edwin V. Nixon & Partners (Arthur Young & Co), chartered accountants, before joining the firm of Ralph King & Yuill, Member of the Sydney Stock Exchange, and establishing its European Branch in Geneva, Switzerland.

He returned to Australia, was elected a Member of the Sydney Stock Exchange in 1973 and established J. M. Messara & Co., Stockbrokers. He retained membership of the Stock Exchange until 1992.

In 1985, Messara established the thoroughbred racing and breeding business Arrowfield Group Limited.

In 1993 he took up a position as executive chairman of the then Stock Exchange-listed company, Arrowfield Group Ltd (formerly Australian Racing & Breeding Stables).

In August 2000 he privatised the Arrowfield Group and became the sole shareholder and chairman of the company.

In 2018 he was commissioned to prepare a report for the New Zealand Government in respect of the New Zealand racing industry's governance structures, and provide recommendations on future directions for the industry (the Messara Report) [7] which was then used as a basis for Government reforms. Messara was ranked 40th on the 2013 list of the Top 50 Most Powerful People in NSW. [16]

Danehill was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who was the most successful sire of all time with 349 stakes winners and 89 Grade 1 winners. He was the leading sire in Australia nine times, the leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland three times and the leading sire in France twice.

Coolmore Stud, in Fethard, County Tipperary, Ireland, is headquarters of the world's largest breeding operation of thoroughbred racehorses. Through its racing arm, Ballydoyle, Coolmore also has raced many classic winners and champions. The operation, which is currently owned and run by the Magnier family, has been associated with a long sequence of top-class stallions since the 1850s, originally in County Cork, where stallions still stand as part of Coolmore today.

Sadler's Wells was an American-bred, Irish-trained champion Thoroughbred racehorse and outstanding sire. He was the 1984 European Champion miler after winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas, Eclipse Stakes and Phoenix Champion Stakes in that year. He also finished second in the French Derby and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Redoute's Choice was a multiple Group One-winning Australian Thoroughbred racehorse and also a champion sire. His dam is a half-sister to the Group One winners Hurricane Sky and Umatilla, and later produced the Group One winners Platinum Scissors and Manhattan Rain.

Peeping Fawn is a Champion Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. Unraced as a two-year-old, it took her four tries to break her maiden at age three. Her form then rapidly improved, reflected by a third-place finish in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and a second in The Oaks, followed by four consecutive Group One wins – the Pretty Polly, Irish Oaks, Nassau and Yorkshire Oaks. She was named the Cartier Champion Three-year-old Filly of 2007.

Orientate is an American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2002 Breeder's Cup Sprint and was voted the U.S. Champion Sprint Horse of 2002.

Ahonoora (1975–1989) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career that lasted from 1977 to 1979 he ran sixteen times and won seven races. Ahonoora was a sprinter who specialised in races over five and six furlongs, with his most important wins coming in the Stewards's Cup at Goodwood and the Group Two William Hill Sprint Championship at York. He is primarily notable for his achievements at stud, where his progeny, including Dr Devious, Park Express and Indian Ridge, made him one of the most significant modern representatives of the Byerley Turk sire line.

William Inglis and Son Pty Ltd is Australia's largest and oldest bloodstock auctioneer. The business was founded by William Inglis in 1867, and is still owned by the Inglis family, with family members actively engaged in the running of the business. By the 1940s, William Inglis and Son was acknowledged as a prominent auction firm, not just in bloodstock, but in general livestock auctions at the then Sydney saleyards in the suburb of Homebush However, as this article claims, by this stage William Inglis and Son Pty Ltd was most notable for its "world famous Sydney Yearling Sales", held at its Newmarket facility at Randwick Racecourse.
