Clifton College is a public school in the city of Bristol in South West England,founded in 1862 and offering both boarding and day school for pupils aged 13–18. In its early years,unlike most contemporary public schools,it emphasised science rather than classics in the curriculum,and was less concerned with social elitism,e.g. by admitting day-boys on equal terms and providing a dedicated boarding house for Jewish boys,called Polack's House. Having linked its General Studies classes with Badminton School,it admitted girls to every year group in 1987,and was the first of the traditional boys' public schools to become fully coeducational. Polack's House closed in 2005 but a scholarship fund open to Jewish candidates still exists. Clifton College is one of the original 26 English public schools as defined by the Public Schools Yearbook of 1889.
Arthur Edward Jeune Collins was an English cricketer and soldier. He held,for 116 years,the record of highest score in cricket:as a 13-year-old schoolboy,he scored 628 not out over four afternoons in June 1899. Collins's record-making innings drew a large crowd and increasing media interest;spectators at the Old Cliftonian match being played nearby were drawn away to watch the junior school house cricket match in which Collins was playing. Despite this achievement,Collins never played first-class cricket. Collins's 628 not out stood as the record score until January 2016 when an Indian boy,Pranav Dhanawade,scored 1009 in a single innings.
Edward Ferdinando Sutton Tylecote was an English cricketer. He was born in Marston Moretaine,Bedfordshire and was educated at Clifton College and played first-class cricket for Oxford University and Kent County Cricket Club. He also played six Test matches for England. His career lasted from 1869 to 1886.
Norman Stewart "Mandy" Mitchell-Innes was an amateur cricketer for Somerset,who played in one Test match for England in 1935. Between 1931 and 1949 Mitchell-Innes played 132 first-class matches,appearing 69 times for Somerset,and 43 times for Oxford University. In these matches he scored 6,944 runs,including 13 centuries and a top score of 207. He was well-regarded for the grace of his batting,but his cricket career was limited by both hay fever and his overseas work commitments.
Ernest Smith was an English amateur first-class cricketer,who played twenty one games for Oxford University from 1888 to 1891,154 matches for Yorkshire County Cricket Club from 1888 to 1907,and four for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) from 1892 to 1902.
John Wemyss"Jake" Seamer was an amateur cricketer who played for Oxford University and Somerset either side of the Second World War. A bespectacled cricketer,Seamer was a right-handed batsman who played with a defensive streak to his game which was rarely seen among amateur batsmen of his time. He was described as a leg break googly bowler,but in truth he rarely bowled at all,and claimed just four first-class wickets.
Edward Keith Scott was an English sportsman who played first-class cricket and represented the England national rugby union team.
Leigh Dunlop Brownlee was a journalist who became editor of the Daily Mirror from 1931 to 1934. He also played first-class cricket for Gloucestershire,Oxford University and Somerset between 1901 and 1909. He was born at Bristol and died at Clifton,also in Bristol.
John Lillingston Carr was an English first-class cricketer and British Army officer. Born in British India,Carr served during the First World War with the Royal Berkshire Regiment. He continued to serve with the regiment after the war,until his retirement in 1936. He also played first-class cricket for the Marylebone Cricket Club and the British Army cricket team. He was the father of the Test cricketer Donald Carr.
