John Victor Nicholas is an Australian judge. He has been a judge of the Federal Court of Australia since November 2009. Prior to his appointment, Nicholas practised as a senior counsel in Sydney, principally in commercial law.

Biography

Nicholas graduated from the University of New South Wales with bachelor's degrees in laws and arts. [1]

Nicholas was admitted as a solicitor in 1982 and as a barrister in 1987, becoming senior counsel in 2001. [2]

The Federal Court of Australia is an Australian superior court of record which has jurisdiction to deal with most civil disputes governed by federal law, along with some summary and indictable criminal matters. Cases are heard at first instance by single judges. The court includes an appeal division referred to as the Full Court comprising three judges, the only avenue of appeal from which lies to the High Court of Australia. In the Australian court hierarchy, the Federal Court occupies a position equivalent to the supreme courts of each of the states and territories. James Leslie Bain Allsop is Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia, in office since 1 March 2013. He was previously President of the New South Wales Court of Appeal, where he presided from 2 June 2008 to 28 February 2013.

Beth Robinson American judge (born 1965)

Beth Robinson is an American lawyer and judge from Vermont. She is a United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and is the first openly lesbian judge to serve on any Circuit Court.
