John Tilemachos Georgopoulos is a fantasy sports writer, radio host and computer/data scientist of Greek ancestry, whose work involving fantasy football analytics has been prominent in the fantasy industry since 1994. [1]

Education and early career

Georgopoulos graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in 1982, where he was classmates with Terence Tolbert, the late political operative for Barack Obama and Christopher "Kid" Reid, the rap musician and actor.

After four years at Fordham University, Georgopoulos graduated in 1986 with degrees in Computer Science and Biology. [2] While still in university, his interest in meshing fantasy sports with computer science became evident as he created a fantasy wrestling game—dubbed Sgt. Slaughter's Matwars [3] —which was a basis of the formation of the Silverline Games entertainment company.

While working as a programmer for an investment bank in 1994, Georgopoulos produced a simple website, with the goal of teaching himself HTML; he chose this forum to express his views on one of his favorite topics: professional football (the NFL). [4]

Fantasy sports journalism career

Georgopoulos' website received enough hits to encourage Georgopoulos to regularly update his commentary, as well as recruit former owners in his college roto leagues to provide additional content. By 1996, Gridiron Grumblings was born, one of the first independent sites of sports commentary [5]

The site received several awards, including Netscape's "Cool Site of the Month" and "Cool Site of the Day", [6] a 'Top Site' recognition by Yahoo! Magazine [7] as well as a recommended site of FHM Magazine. [8]

In 1998, drawing on his experience in FOREX markets and as a programmer, Georgopoulos designed the "Fantasy Forecast Rating System", a ranking system to be used across all NFL positions, enabling the absolute valuation of players. Its success as a tool for fantasy football owners led to the concept being applied to all the major fantasy sports: baseball, basketball and hockey. Applications of his techniques were picked up by Sports Illustrated, which ran Georgopoulos' content. [9]

Internet Audio Broadcasts as early as 1996, Georgopoulos was producing one-hour audio broadcasts, which were made available to his readers. Dubbed "WGRD Radio", there were 117 episodes recorded through September 11, 2001. His first-person account of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center marked the final broadcast of WGRD Radio.[ citation needed ]

In 2004, WGRD Radio was reincarnated as Gridiron Grumblings Live!, a two-hour live broadcast covering fantasy football, the NFL and other topical events. [10]

Individual Defensive Players (IDPs) in standard fantasy football leagues. While a staple of fantasy football drafts today, the inclusion of IDPs in 1996-97 was considered FFL heresy. Consistency Rankings was a metric designed to describe the degree to which a set of player performances varied—either over the course of a season or a career which was in essence, the application of a Coefficient of Variance to fantasy play. [11] Age Variance was a metric to define the statistical effect of player age on performance, by position. [12]

On Sept. 4, 2010, Georgopoulos premiered a new weekly show, Sports Grumblings Live!, on SiriusXM Satellite radio. The show was a three-hour broadcast focusing on all the major fantasy sports, concurrently entertaining and informing the listeners. The show had a time slot of 8-11 PM ET on Saturday nights, on Sirius 210| XM 87. [13] Sirius/XM decided not to renew the show for a second season.

In 2013, Georgopoulos accepted an offer to be a featured fantasy football writer at Fantasy Sharks.com. [14]

In 2020, Georgopoulos left Fantasy Sharks to form a new fantasy sports site, Nerd Fantasy Sports, which leveraged the talents of data scientists and veteran fantasy sports journalists. [15]

In 2022, Georgopoulos partnered with fellow fantasy sports pioneer William Del Pilar to re-launch Sports Grumblings. This iteration will have a heavier focus on podcasts and visual shows, as well as an emphasis on its original mission of sports commentary. [16]

Other ventures

Georgopoulos has also taken the time to dabble in the entertainment industry; he has produced, directed and performed in two comedy series (for which he is also credited as a writer) on the Amazon Prime Video platform, Net News (2018) and Back to the Stone Age (2021). Additionally, he is credited as a writer and producer for the unreleased series Celebrapy (2015). Georgopoulos has co-hosted That Riot Show, a podcast found on YouTube, iTunes and other platforms, since 2015. [17]

Personal life

Georgopoulos has publicly identified himself as a libertarian, both politically and philosophically. [18]

Playboy Radio was an internet radio station originally launched on XM Satellite Radio on September 1, 2002. Its programming was dedicated to similar topics and celebrity personalities found in its parent publication, Playboy Magazine. It was XM's first premium station — offered à la carte on top of the base XM subscription price. Playboy Radio gained a healthy following, including a dedicated group of Night Calls fans that established a strong online presence, although some complained the station offered too little content for the monthly premium.

Sports radio is a radio format devoted entirely to discussion and broadcasting of sporting events. A widespread programming genre that has a narrow audience appeal, sports radio is characterized by an often-boisterous on-air style and extensive debate and analysis by both hosts and callers. Many sports talk stations also carry play-by-play of local sports teams as part of their regular programming. Hosted by Bill Mazer, the first sports talk radio show in history launched in March 1964 on New York's WNBC (AM).

WMUA is a student-run college radio station. Licensed to serve Amherst, Massachusetts, United States, the station is based on the campus of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The station's broadcast license is held by the University of Massachusetts. WMUA celebrated its 70th Anniversary of continuous on-air broadcasting during the 2017-2018 school year. The station debuted a second, online only stream called WMUAx in September 2017.

After writing for Rotoworld as a side-job, Berry launched his own fantasy sports websites "TalentedMr.Roto.com" in 2004 and "Rotopass.com". Berry worked for ESPN from 2007 to 2022 as their "Senior Fantasy Sports Analyst".

The Las Vegas Raiders Radio Network is an American radio network composed of 52 radio stations which carry English-language coverage of the Las Vegas Raiders, a professional football team in the National Football League (NFL). Las Vegas market stations KRLV (920 AM) and KOMP (92.3 FM) serve as the network's two flagships. FantasyGuru.com, launched in 1995, is a subscription-based fantasy football website. The company, which originated as a newsletter published by owner John Hansen, entered its 17th year in business in 2011. Specializing in the National Football League, the site provides projections, statistical analysis, player rankings, and other tools for subscribers. The site's staff also produces regular podcasts and is active in social networking, with accounts on Facebook and Twitter.

Greg Cosell is an NFL analyst and a senior producer at NFL Films. He is the nephew of late broadcaster Howard Cosell. Cosell is highly regarded by NFL insiders for his football knowledge.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">NBC Sports Radio</span> American sports radio network

NBC Sports Radio was a sports radio network that debuted on September 4, 2012. The network content was produced by the NBC Sports Group division of NBCUniversal and distributed by Westwood One, which is the corporate successor to the remains of the original NBC Radio Network that was dissolved in the 1980s. NBC Sports Radio was available through over 300 affiliates throughout the United States as of September 2013, as well as through live streaming on NBCSportsRadio.com, NBCSports.com, WestwoodOneSports.com, and the affiliates' websites. Its launch made NBC the last major broadcast network with a sports radio network to complement its sports division.

NFL Insiders was a National Football League studio show, that aired Monday through Friday at 3:00 p.m. ET on ESPN. The football-themed show replaced NFL 32 on August 5, 2013. The program was one of the only NFL-related studio programs to air during the week along with NFL Live. On September 13, 2015, a new Sunday edition of NFL Insiders began airing on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. ET, replacing the first hour of Sunday NFL Countdown.

Alex Marvez is an American sportscaster, journalist and author who currently works for Sirius XM NFL Radio, where he hosts a daily prime-time radio show. A former Pro Football Writers of America president, Marvez has covered the NFL since 1995 and worked for the Sporting News, FOX Sports, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Rocky Mountain News and Dayton Daily News and has a Hall of Fame vote. He worked previously for the Miami Herald, covering the Miami Heat, Florida International University sports and high school sports, along with writing a pro wrestling column starting in 1989. That later continued for Scripps-Howard News Service until he shifted his work focus full-time to the NFL in 2012.
