John West (Scottish politician)

John West (born 1988) was Depute Provost of Aberdeen City Council from May 2007 until July 2009. [1] He became the youngest person elected as a Local Authority councillor in Scotland on 3 May 2007 at the age of eighteen with the Scottish National Party. He was elected to Aberdeen City Council by the Hazlehead, Ashley and Queens Cross Ward.

His election to the position of Depute Provost drew both praise and criticism, due to his young age. [ citation needed ] His older sister, Kirsty Blackman (born 1986) is also a SNP politician, elected as councillor for the Hilton/Stockethill area in 2007 and as MP for Aberdeen North in 2015. West masterminded Kevin Stewart's election as Aberdeen Central MSP in May 2011. [ citation needed ]

He did not seek to be re-elected in the 2012 Scottish Local Elections.

2012 Angus Council election

Elections to Angus Council were held on 3 May 2012 the same day as the other Scottish local government elections. The election used the eight wards, created as a result of the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, with each ward electing three or four Councillors using the single transferable vote system a form of proportional representation, with 29 Councillors being elected.

Elections to Falkirk Council were held on 3 May 2012, the same day as the 31 other local authorities in Scotland. The election used the nine wards created under the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, with 32 councillors being elected. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system.

2017 Scottish local elections

The 2017 Scottish local elections were held on Thursday 4 May, in all 32 local authorities. The SNP retained its position as the largest party in terms of votes and councillors, despite suffering minor losses. The Conservatives made gains and displaced Labour as the second largest party, while the Liberal Democrats suffered a net loss of councillors despite increasing their share of the vote. Minor parties and independents polled well; and independent councillors retained majority control over the three island councils. For the first time since the local government reforms in 1995, all councils fell under no overall control.

2016 Scottish National Party depute leadership election

There was a Scottish National Party leadership election to choose the new Depute leader of the Scottish National Party at the SNP's conference on 14–15 October 2016. The SNP's Westminster Group Leader Angus Robertson MP won the election.

2017 Glasgow City Council election

The Glasgow City Council election of 2017 was held on 4 May 2017, the same day as the 31 other Scottish local government elections. The election was the first to use 23 new wards, created as a result of the Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland's 5th Review. Each ward elected three or four councillors using the single transferable vote system, a form of proportional representation used since the 2007 election and according to the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004.

Thomas Gee Mason is a Scottish Conservative politician who is a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the North East Scotland region. Mason was sworn in on 20 June 2017, following the resignation of Ross Thomson.
