John von Ahlen (born 26 September 1968) is an Australian musician, producer, vocalist, and instrumentalist based in Melbourne. He is the lead vocalist of the electronic pop and synthwave band Parralox, formed in 2008. [1] [2] Parralox caught the attention of the international EDM community within the same year. [3] [4] He has been additionally involved in other music projects, such as The Sound of the Crowd. [5] and The Tenth Stage. [6] Von Ahlen also hosts Neon Nights on Joy 94.9, Australia's largest LGBTIQ radio station. [7] He is also an animal rights activist. [8]
John von Ahlen is based in Melbourne, Australia and he was born on 26 September 1968. [9] [10] As a child, he explored music, taking up both the saxophone and clarinet; by high school his focus had switched to piano and synthesisers. [11]
His first band, Nova, was signed to Sirius Music records via Sony Dancepool Australia in 1993. John signed to a publishing deal with Mushroom Records after co-writing tracks with Gina G for the album "BC Nation" by Australian pop act "Bass Culture". [12] The track "Love Will Find A Way" from "BC Nation" was subsequently used in the Australian TV Soap Opera "Home and Away".
In 2000, John von Ahlen co-wrote and produced the song Get Tzatziki With It for the 2000 Australian comedy film The Wog Boy (starring Australian actor Nick Giannopoulos). [13] He also contributed to other motion picture soundtracks including Happy Endings Sleepover, Mangus!, and Fat Girls. [14]
In 2003, John von Ahlen produced the theme music for the Australian light entertainment television programme Rove Live, and he additionally composed and produced the theme music for the television comedy programs Skithouse and Before the Game. [13]
John von Ahlen has directed and produced numerous music videos, with over 3 million views for his work with Parralox. In 1997, producer John Von Ahlen of Subterrane Recording Studio created an unofficial video for The Human League single "Stay With Me Tonight" that was distributed on the internet. The von Ahlen video utilized animated stills using 3dfx and Version 4.2 of Adobe Premiere. It has now become the de facto music video for the track. [15]
While managed by Jaime Jimenez, John von Ahlen formed the production company "Planet J" and produced, remixed and co-wrote on many projects including the 2000 Australian comedy film The Wog Boy and collaborating with artists Emmanuel Carella, Chrissa, Jimmy Christo, X3, and Girl Friday. [13]
John von Ahlen also collaborated with Ean Sugarman (of the Australian pop act Euphoria) [13] and they produced and remixed for artists including Lani Zaitman, [13] Melissa James [13] and Dara. [13]
John von Ahlen produced the track Somebody (Is Out There) for Paul Lekakis, known for his 80s hit Boom Boom (Let's Go Back to My Room).
John von Ahlen and Jiminez also formed the short lived dance project "Mr Jones" which was signed to Sony Music Australia, and released the single "Better Days" in 2002, and the "Big Adventure" in 2003 which featured Belinda Emmett on lead vocals. [16]
John von Ahlen has also contributed vocals to the English synth project Sound of Science, [17] as well as the Australian electronic music label Clan Analogue. [18]
In 2018 John von Ahlen produced the single "Fly Me To The Moon" for the Australian trans-human performer "Venus Virgin Tomarz", released on his label Subterrane Records. [13]
Despite his successful career producing music for other artists, he felt the need to make music for himself – leading him to form the dark and gothic steampunk band The Tenth Stage. [19] He soon started venturing more towards pop music. [19] In 2008, he created the electronic pop and synthwave band Parralox, which has performed internationally and had international chart success on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance/Club Charts, the UK Upfront Club Chart Top 40 and the Official UK Music Week Commercial Pop Top 30. Notable contributors to Parralox include Jane Badler, Marcella Detroit, and Ian Burden (The Human League). Influences on Paralox include Stuart Price, Trevor Horn, and Goldfrapp. [18]
John von Ahlen is the host of Neon Nights on Joy 94.9, Australia's largest LGBTIQ radio station. Danielle Jane "Dannii" Minogue is an Australian singer, television personality, and actress. She first gained recognition for her appearances on the television show Young Talent Time (1982–1988) and for her role as Emma Jackson on the soap opera Home and Away (1989–1990). Minogue began her music career in the early 1990s, achieving early success with her debut studio album, Love and Kisses (1991), which was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry, and included the hit singles "Love and Kisses", "Baby Love", "Jump to the Beat" and "Success". Following the release of her second album, Get into You (1993), Minogue's popularity as a singer had declined, leading her to make a name for herself with award-winning performances in theatre productions.

Skithouse was an Australian sketch comedy television series that ran on Network Ten from 9 February 2003 to 28 July 2004. The series was produced by Roving Enterprises. It featured many well-known Australian comedians, including comedy-band Tripod. Reruns can now be seen on The Comedy Channel on Foxtel. In the UK, it is shown on the channel Paramount Comedy 2 and Trouble. The title name itself is a pun on the colloquialism "shithouse".
Marcella Levy, known professionally as Marcy Levy and Marcella Detroit, is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. She co-wrote the 1977 Eric Clapton hit "Lay Down Sally" and released her debut studio album Marcella in 1982. She joined Shakespears Sister in 1988 with ex-Bananarama member Siobhan Fahey. Their first two studio albums, Sacred Heart (1989), and Hormonally Yours (1992), both reached the top 10 of the UK Albums Chart. Detroit sang the lead vocals on their biggest hit, "Stay", which spent eight consecutive weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart in 1992. Detroit left the band in 1993 and had a UK top 20 hit with "I Believe" in 1994. She formed the Marcy Levy Band in 2002, and finished third in the 2010 ITV series Popstar to Operastar.
"I Want to Take You Higher" is a song by the soul/rock/funk band Sly and the Family Stone, the B-side to their Top 30 hit "Stand!". Unlike most of the other tracks on the Stand! album, "I Want to Take You Higher" is not a message song; instead, it is simply dedicated to music and the feeling one gets from music. Like nearly all of Sly & the Family Stone's songs, Sylvester "Sly Stone" Stewart was credited as the sole songwriter.

Neon Nights is the fourth studio album by Australian singer Dannii Minogue. It was released through London Records on 17 March 2003. Sacred Heart is the debut studio album by British pop-rock act Shakespear's Sister, released on 21 August 1989 by FFRR Records. The album was recorded after Siobhan Fahey decided to leave the girl group Bananarama. Initially intended as a solo act for Fahey, Shakespear's Sister became a partnership of Fahey and Marcella Detroit during the making of the album. The album spawned four singles, including "You're History", released in July 1989, which reached No. 7 on the UK singles chart and was the first release to present the act as a duo. The album peaked at No. 9 on the UK albums chart, and was certificated gold by the BPI.

"Saturday Night" is a song by Italian Eurodance project Whigfield, fronted by Danish-born Sannie Charlotte Carlson. It was first released in 1992 in Italy and 1993 in Spain through Prodisc. Throughout 1994, it was released across the rest of Europe and experienced worldwide success. The song was written by Italian producers Larry Pignagnoli and Davide Riva and produced by Pignagnoli. In 1995, the song was included on Whigfield's debut album, Whigfield.
"Never Ending Story" is the title song from the English version of the 1984 film The NeverEnding Story. It was produced and composed by Italian musician Giorgio Moroder and performed by English pop singer Limahl. He released two versions of the song, one in English and one in French. The English version featured vocals by Beth Andersen, and the French version, titled L'Histoire Sans Fin, featured vocals by Ann Calvert. Parralox is an Australian synthpop band formed by John von Ahlen in 2008. Originally featuring lead vocalist Rowena "Roxy" Martin and producer, songwriter John von Ahlen of dance act Nova; the band has undergone a number of line-up changes, most notably the replacement of lead vocalist Roxy with Amii Jackson and the addition of The Human League's Ian Burden on bass guitar.
Synthwave is an electronic music microgenre that is based predominantly on the music associated with action, science-fiction, and horror film soundtracks of the 1980s. Other influences are drawn from the decade's art and video games. Synthwave musicians often espouse nostalgia for 1980s culture and attempt to capture the era's atmosphere and celebrate it.

The Rise of the Synths is a 2019 documentary film written and directed by Iván Castell and narrated by filmmaker and composer John Carpenter. The film explores the origins and growth of the electronic music genre known as synthwave, charting its rise in popularity from the underground online music scene to its recent mainstream exposure, following use in retro-themed soundtracks, notably the 2011 film Drive and more recently, the television series Stranger Things.
Jordy Leenaerts, better known by the stage name Timecop1983, is a Dutch electronic musician from Eindhoven, producing music in the synthwave genre. His debut album, Childhood Memories, was released in 2014, followed by Journeys in the same year. The albums Reflections and Night Drive were released in 2015 and 2018, respectively. He explained in an interview that his stage name came about as a combination of Futurecop! and his year of birth.
