John F. Lander was a footballer who played as an inside-forward for Burslem Port Vale in 1892.

Career

Lander joined Burslem Port Vale in September 1892. [1] His first match was a 4–0 defeat by Sheffield United in a Second Division game at Bramall Lane on 17 December 1892. [1] He scored two goals in a 3–0 win over Walsall Town Swifts at the Athletic Ground on New Year's Eve but was released at the end of the 1892–93 season having played just three games for the club. [1]

Port Vale Football Club are a professional football club based in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, England, which compete in EFL League Two, the fourth tier of the English football league system. The 1892–93 season was Burslem Port Vale's first season of football in the English Football League. The club were founding members of the Football League Second Division, the First Division having been in operation for four seasons before 1892–93. A learning curve for the club, it marked the first of four seasons of struggle in what was rapidly becoming the second tier of the strongest league in the world. This learning curve was punctuated by the biggest league defeat in the club's history, a 10–0 humiliation in a snowstorm at home to Sheffield United on 10 December 1892, still a Football League record for a home defeat.
