Until October 2022,he was also the party leader of the Amani National Congress (ANC),one of the founding political parties,of the Kenya Kwanza alliance. He served as the 7th Vice-President of Kenya in 2002 and Deputy Prime Minister (2008–2012),when he resigned to contest for the Presidency in the 2013 Kenyan general election and emerged third. He was the deputy party leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) (2005–2012) and Party Leader of the United Democratic Forum Party (UDF) from May 2012 to July 2015.
Machakos County is one of the 47 counties of Kenya,which came into being because of the devolved system of governance occasioned by the 2010 constitution of Kenya. The country's first administrative headquarters are in Machakos Town,which is the largest town in the county. The county had a population of 1,421,932 as of 2019. The county borders Nairobi and Kiambu counties to the west,Embu to the north,Kitui to the east,Makueni to the south,Kajiado to the south west,and Muranga and Kirinyaga to the north west.
Charity Kaluki Ngilu is a Kenyan politician and the second governor elected for Kitui County. She unsuccessfully vied to be President of the Republic of Kenya in 1997. She served as Minister for Health from 2003 until 2007 and Minister of Water and Irrigation from April 2008 to 2013. She also served as Cabinet Secretary for Land,Housing and Urban Development from 2013 until 2015.

On 27 April 2013,Kenyan politician and lawyer Mutula Kilonzo,who was serving as the first Senator of Makueni County,died at his ranch in Maanzoni,Machakos County. A requiem mass was held at the Nairobi Baptist Church in Nairobi on 8 May,followed by his burial at his home village in Makueni County,in line with his wishes.
Bernard Muia Kiala,is the first Deputy Governor of Machakos County. He was born in Masinga Sub-County.
The National Super Alliance,known by the abbreviation NASA,was a Kenyan political coalition of opposition centre-left parties that was formed in January 2017. The coalition was created to oppose President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto in the 2017 general elections. Raila Odinga,Musalia Mudavadi,Kalonzo Musyoka,Moses Wetangula and Isaac Ruto were the co-principals of the coalition.
Johnson Arthur Sakaja is a Kenyan politician serving as the governor of Nairobi City County since 25 August 2022. Previously,he served as the Senator of Nairobi from 2017 to 2022,and as a nominated Member of the National Assembly from 2013 to 2017. He was nominated to Parliament by The National Alliance (TNA) party which was part of the ruling Jubilee Coalition. He was the National Chairman of The National Alliance (TNA) until 9 September 2016 when the party merged with 12 others to form the Jubilee Party.
Wavinya Ndeti is a Kenyan politician and a business woman who is serving as the 2nd Governor of Machakos County. She previously served as a Member of Parliament for the Kathiani Constituency in the 10th Kenyan parliament and an assistant minister in the ministry of youth affairs and sport from 2008 to 2013. She was the first woman to be elected as a member of parliament in Machakos county since independence. She was a CCU candidate in 2013 and WDM-K candidate in 2017 for Machakos Governor.
The 2017 Machakos gubernatorial election took place on 8 August 2017 to elect the governor and deputy governor of Machakos,concurrently with Machakos Senator to the Senate as other Counties and Machakos MPs to the Kenya National Assembly and Elections of County Assembly MCAs.
The governor of the County of Machakos is the chief executive of the Kenya Devolved Government of Machakos County. The governor is the head of the executive branch of County government of Machakos.
The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) was a proposed set of amendments to the Constitution of Kenya initially proposed in October 2019. In the wake of the 2017 general election annulment and subsequent re-run,incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta mandated the formation of the Presidential Taskforce on Building Bridges to Unity Advisory on 31 May 2018. Agnes Kavindu Muthama is a Kenyan politician who currently serves as Machakos Senator. She was voted on a Wiper ticket to serve as the Senator for Machakos County on March 19,2021. She also served as Tanathi Water Service Board from 2018 to 2021.
