The Jokela Prison (Finnish : Jokelan vankila) is a prison located near the Jokela railway station in the Jokela village of Tuusula, Finland, opened in 1993. [2] The prison is part of Southern Finland's criminal sanctions area maintained by the Criminal Sanctions Agency. [1]

The capacity of prison is 84 in the closed ward and 40 in the open prison outside the wall. [1] [3] About one third of the prison's inmates are of foreign origin. [4] About 90 people work in Jokela prison, most of them in surveillance and prisoner transport. In Jokela prison's work activities, inmates do various packing and assembly jobs as well as clothing maintenance. In addition, in Jokela prison, inmates can complete the Valma training, which prepares them for vocational studies and working life, organized by the Spesia vocational college. [1]

The prison has a prison shop open to the public, where products made by inmates are sold. [5]

Prisons in India are overcrowded and eight of out ten prisoners in Indian jails await trial. There are 1319 prisons in India as of 2021. Currently, there are about 1400 prisons. After the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of prisoners increased 13 per cent from 2020 to 2021, making over 80 per cent of the prisons overcrowded. After the Supreme Court order, a number of prisoners were release in 2020 to decongest the jails reducing the overall prison occupancy in 20 states and two Union Territories to a little over 93 per cent. However, the occupancy rate increased to 130 per cent again by 2021. About 63 unnatural deaths took place in Indian prisons. Among the major states, Tamil Nadu is the only state which has less than 100 per cent occupancy followed by Karnataka.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Helsinki County Prison</span>

The Helsinki County Prison in the Helsinki city quarters of Katajanokka was a prison that operated from 1837 to 2002. It was established in 1837 by Tsar Nikolai I by the side of the Helsinki Crown Prison, which had operated from 1749. When completed, the prison had 12 cells, two rooms for guards and a worship room which is still extant and has been used for church weddings. The prison area was surrounded by a high red brick wall. The prison was extended in 1888 with the construction of a cell block in the form of a cross, in the classical Philadelphia model; the old part of the prison was converted to an administrative building.

Turku Prison is the main correctional facility in southwestern Finland, located in the Saramäki district of Turku. It was formed in 2003 by the merger of the earlier Turku Central Prison, also commonly known as 'Kakola', and Turku County Prison, and moved in 2007 from its old location on the Kakolanmäki hill in central Turku to its new premises. It is a closed prison, with capacity for 255 inmates. Along with Riihimäki, Turku is one of two prisons in Finland with the highest A+ security rating. In 2021, a new high security wing was added, to house prisoners associated with organised crime or otherwise likely to pose particular risks.

Riihimäki Prison is the main correctional facility in southern Finland, located in Riihimäki. It is a closed prison, with capacity for 223 inmates. Along with Turku, Riihimäki is one of two prisons in Finland with the highest A+ security rating. It houses prisoners mainly from southern Finland, as well as comprising three national specialist units, including one for sexual offenders.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Suomenlinna prison</span>

The Suomenlinna prison is an open prison in Suomenlinna, Helsinki, Finland, founded in 1971. It was previously known as the Suomenlinna penal colony. The prison is located at the southern tip of the island of Iso-Mustasaari. The prison was founded to help in the repair and restoration work of the Suomenlinna fortress; the prison co-operates with the Governing Body of Suomenlinna belonging to the Finnish Ministry of Education. Prisoners in the open prison, nicknamed Konnala work on weekdays in various jobs all over the island, under supervision. Most particularly they repair the buildings and stonework in Suomenlinna or maintain the scenery.
