Programmes are typically provided, managed, and funded by the prison system, though inmates may be required to pay for distance education programmes. The history of and current practices in prison education vary greatly among countries.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of prisoners increased 13% from 2020 to 2021, making over 80% of the prisons overcrowded. After the Supreme Court order, a number of prisoners were released in 2020 to decongest the jails, reducing the overall prison occupancy in 20 states and two Union Territories to a little over 93%. However, the occupancy rate increased to 130% again by 2021. About 63 unnatural deaths took place in Indian prisons. Among the major states, Tamil Nadu is the only state which has less than 100% occupancy followed by Karnataka.

The Helsinki County Prison in the Helsinki city quarters of Katajanokka was a prison that operated from 1837 to 2002. It was established in 1837 by Tsar Nikolai I by the side of the Helsinki Crown Prison, which had operated from 1749. When completed, the prison had 12 cells, two rooms for guards and a worship room which is still extant and has been used for church weddings. The prison area was surrounded by a high red brick wall. The prison was extended in 1888 with the construction of a cell block in the form of a cross, in the classical Philadelphia model; the old part of the prison was converted to an administrative building.

With an operating capacity of 740, it is the largest women's prison in the state and is surrounded by Washington State Route 16, and McCormick forest park. It opened 53 years ago in 1971, 82 years after statehood.

Turku Prison is the main correctional facility in southwestern Finland, located in the Saramäki district of Turku. It was formed in 2003 by the merger of the earlier Turku Central Prison, also commonly known as 'Kakola', and Turku County Prison, and moved in 2007 from its old location on the Kakolanmäki hill in central Turku to its new premises. It is a closed prison, with capacity for 255 inmates. Along with Riihimäki, Turku is one of two prisons in Finland with the highest A+ security rating. In 2021, a new high security wing was added, to house prisoners associated with organised crime or otherwise likely to pose particular risks.
Riihimäki Prison is the main correctional facility in southern Finland, located in Riihimäki. It is a closed prison, with capacity for 223 inmates. Along with Turku, Riihimäki is one of two prisons in Finland with the highest A+ security rating. It houses prisoners mainly from southern Finland, as well as comprising three national specialist units, including one for sexual offenders.
The Suomenlinna prison is an open prison in Suomenlinna, Helsinki, Finland, founded in 1971. It was previously known as the Suomenlinna penal colony. The prison is located at the southern tip of the island of Iso-Mustasaari. The prison was founded to help in the repair and restoration work of the Suomenlinna fortress; the prison co-operates with the Governing Body of Suomenlinna belonging to the Finnish Ministry of Education. Prisoners in the open prison, nicknamed Konnala work on weekdays in various jobs all over the island, under supervision. Most particularly they repair the buildings and stonework in Suomenlinna or maintain the scenery.
