Jon Santacana Maiztegui (born 1 November 1980) is a Spanish B2 classified visually impaired para-alpine skier. His sighted ski guide is Miguel Galindo Garces. Santacana has competed at the IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships, in the European Cup and the IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup, and Spanish national competitions. He represented Spain at the 2002 Winter Paralympics, 2006 Winter Paralympics and 2010 Winter Paralympics, earning a gold medal and a pair of silver medals at the 2010 Games.

Personal

Santacana was born on 1 November 1980 in San Sebestian, Guipúzcoa, [1] in the Basque region of Spain. [2] As of 2012, he lives in Getxo, Vizcaya, Spain and is an INEF student. [1]

Santacana has a vision impairment, [3] which is the result of a genetic problem that manifested itself when he was eight years old. [1]

Skiing

Santacana is a B2 classified visually impaired skier. [1] Miguel Galindo Garces is his guide. [4]

Santacana earned a gold medal at the Switzerland hosted 2000 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships. [4] In 2005, while skiing at La Molina, Spain, he fell and seriously injured himself and was unable to ski until near the start of the 2006 Winter Paralympics. [5]

Santacana earned a gold medal for the overall 2006/2007 European Cup season. [4] He finished the 2006/2007 IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup season in second place. [5] At the last round of the European Cup in March 2008, an event held in La Molina, he was one of several Spanish skiers competing. [6] He finished the 2007/2008 European Cup season in second place after the five test events. Galindo was his guide for the season. [7] He finished the 2007/2008 World Cup season in third place. [8] At the conclusion of the first World Cup event in the 2008/2009 season, he sat in first place in the World Cup standings. [9] It was his eighth career World Cup event. [8] He earned a gold medal and two silver medals at the 2009 World Championships in South Korea. [4] [10] [11] His first gold came in the Super Combined event. [11] He was one of six skiers and four guides making up the Spanish team at the World Championships. [12]

At the 2010 World Cup Alpine Skiing for Disabled in Abtenau, Austria, Santacana and his guide earned a bronze in the giant slalom event following a first run where they finished fifth and a second run where they finished second. [4] He was unable to compete in the Super Combined event because it was cancelled. [13] He then competed in the third round of the European Cup later in January at La Molina. [14] He finished fifth in the slalom event. [15] At the final event of the 2009/2010 World Cup season, an event held in March 2010 in Aspen, Colorado, he earned a gold medal in one event with guide Galindo. This was the last major event before the 2010 Games. [16] [17] He also earned a bronze medal in the Giant Slalom event, while finishing sixth in the Super Combined. [17] He came into the Aspen World Cup event with 625 World Cup points. [18]

Santacana participated in an April 2010 Vancouver hosted competition organised by the Federación Española de Deportes de Personas con Discapacidad Física (FEDDF), Federación Española de Deportes para Paralíticos Cerebrales (FEDPC) and Federación Española de Deportes para Ciegos (FEDC). [19] [20] He competed in a November 2010 ski competition in Landgraaf, Netherlands where he earned a gold medal in the downhill event. [21] At the first World Cup event in the 2010/2011 season, which was held in Arta Terme, Italy, Santacana and Galindo finished second in the first of the four events held. [22] At the 2011 World Championships held in Sestriere, Italy, he finished first in the Super-G event. [23] He participated in the 2012 Campeonatos de España de Esquí held in Valle de Arán, where the Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super G events were contested. He won gold in all three events. [24] Near the end of the 2011/2012 ski season, he participated in a World Cup event in Italy where he finished first in the giant slalom event in the men's vision impaired group. [25] In September 2012, he tore his Achilles tendon. [26] At a January 2013 World Cup event in Switzerland, skiing with Galindo, he earned a gold medal in the giant slalom event. While he did not medal in any other events at the competition, he maintained his place on the top of the World Cup leader board for the season. [27] He won three gold medals at the IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships. [28] [29]

At the 2017 World Championships Santacana won two silver medals in the downhill, [30] and slalom, [31] a bronze medal in the giant slalom, [32] and fished fourth in the super combined. [33]

Paralympics

Santacana earned a gold medal and two bronzes at the 2002 Winter Paralympics. [4] [34]

In November 2009, Santacana attended an event in Madrid organised by Programa de Alto Rendimiento Paralímpico (Programa ARPA) as part of the preparation for the Vancouver Games. [35] Before departing for Vancouver, he participated in a departure ceremony attended by State Secretary for Sport Jaime Lissavetzky, secretary general of Social Policy Francisco Moza, the President of the Spanish Paralympic Committee Miguel Carballeda, and managing director of the Spanish Paralympic Committee Alberto Jofre. [2] The whole Spanish team arrived in Whistler ahead of the 2010 Games by 7 February. [36]

His guide for the 2010 Winter Paralympics was Galindo. [37] Fog in Vancouver resulted in a change in scheduling for his ski events. [38] The pair won a gold medal in the men's vision impaired downhill event. [37] His gold medal was the first gold won by a Spaniard at the Games. [39] Going into Vancouver, he was ranked second in the world in the downhill. [18] He was second in the first and second runs of the men's vision impaired Giant Slalom event. [40] He finished fifth in the super giant event at the Games. [41] He finished the 2010 Games with one gold medal and two silver medals. [42] Following the Games, the Spanish Paralympic team attended a welcome back celebration at the ONCE Foundation that was also attended by Infanta Elena, Duchess of Lugo. [43]

Gabriel Juan Gorce Yepes is a visually impaired Spanish B2 classified para-alpine skier. He has had several guide skiers including Aleix Suñé, Félix Aznar and Arnau Ferrer. He competed in the European Cup and the IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup, at the 2009 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships 2011 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships, 2013 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships and the 2010 Winter Paralympics. He was also a competitor in the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games.

Raquel Garcia Borreguero is a Spanish para-alpine guide skier from Huesca. Working with Anna Cohí, she has competed in the European Cup, 2010 Winter Paralympics, and IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup. They have also participated in a Spanish national team training camp.

Félix Aznar is a Spanish skier who has served as para-alpine guide for Paralympic skiers including Andrés Boira and Gabriel Gorce. He skied with Gorce at the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver. He has competed in the European Cup and the IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup as a guide skier.

Aleix Suñé is a Spanish para-alpine ski guide. He competed at the 2009 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships while serving as the guide skier for Gabriel Gorce and the 2010 Winter Paralympics with Andrés Boira.

Jacob Guilera Casas is a single arm amputee para-alpine standing skier from Spain. He has competed at the European Cup, the Paralympic Winter World Cup, the Italian National Championships, the World Cup, and the World Championships.

Ramón Homs Miralpeix is a Spanish para-alpine LW6/8 classified standing skier. He represented Spain at the 2006 Winter Paralympics where he did not earn a medal. He has also competed at the Spanish national championships, the European Cup and the IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup.

Óscar Antonio Espallargas Juarez is a Spanish para-alpine mono-skier. In 2011, he moved to Aran for the 2011/2012 ski season in order to be based at Centro de Deportes de Invierno Adaptados. He was a competitor in the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games.

Carme García Rigau is a Spanish visually impaired B3 classified para-alpine skier, blind sailor and journalist. She represented Spain at the 2002 Winter Paralympics and 2006 Winter Paralympics in para-alpine, and did not medal in either Games appearance. In 2011, she participated in the International Association for Disabled Sailing International (IFDS) Championship where her boat finished sixth.

She has competed in a number of skiing events since 2009 including the 2009 National Championships where she won a pair of gold medals in the slalom and giant slalom events.
