Jonathan Moakes

Jonathan Moakes is a South African political administrator and strategist who worked as chief executive officer of the Democratic Alliance, the second largest political party in the country. He is now employed as chief of staff for party leader Mmusi Maimane. [1]

Background

Moakes was born in Northampton, England and moved to South Africa at the age of three months. [2] He was schooled in Cape Town, and obtained a B.Com in Economics and an LLB from the University of Cape Town, winning the UCT Law Faculty's Human Rights Moot Court competition in 2003. [3]

Professional political career

He worked in the DA's fundraising department, succeeding David Maynier as the party's Director of Fundraising in July 2007. [2] In February 2008 he was appointed to head up the DA's Western Cape registration campaign, and also to oversee the party's support service operations. He was appointed Executive Director of Political Activity and Campaigns in July 2008, and worked alongside party CEO Ryan Coetzee in running the party's ground operations during the 2009 general elections. [2]

He subsequently succeeded Coetzee as the party's CEO in July 2009, [2] and now works as Chief of Staff for party leader Mmusi Maimane. [1]

Controversy

In August 2011, Moakes led a staff reshuffle at the DA's head office, which was criticized for leaving the party with an all-white team of top executives and including the hiring of his wife Khurshed as executive director of support services. [4] However, the party's federal executive chairperson James Selfe stated that Moakes had recused himself from his wife's hiring process. [5]

Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet (South Africa)

South Africa's Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet consists of Members of the National Assembly who scrutinise their corresponding office holders in the executive branch of government and develop alternative policies for their respective portfolios. The Democratic Alliance (DA) retained their position as official opposition following the 2014 general elections and announced their shadow cabinet on 5 June. The shadow cabinet has subsequently been reshuffled on many occasions namely on 24 November 2016 and 1 June 2017.

John Steenhuisen South African politician

John Henry Steenhuisen is a South African politician who has been serving as the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly since October 2019 and the interim Federal Leader of the Democratic Alliance since November 2019. He previously served as the Chief Whip of the Official Opposition under the leadership of Mmusi Maimane from May 2014 to October 2019. He has been serving as a Member of the National Assembly since July 2011. Prior to his appointment to the National Assembly, he was involved with the politics of KwaZulu-Natal, serving as the Provincial Leader of the DA and the party's caucus leader in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature.

Tim Harris is a South African politician, a former Democratic Alliance member of the National Assembly, and a Parliamentary Counsellor to Mmusi Maimane, the Leader of the Opposition. He served as Shadow Minister of Finance from 2012 to 2014, and was succeeded by Dion George. A former chief of staff to party leader Tony Leon, Harris was the party's national events manager during the 2009 general election campaign, and was subsequently elected to Parliament aged 29, initially to the National Council of Provinces where he served as the Western Cape's Provincial Whip before being moved to the National Assembly in a Shadow Cabinet reshuffle. Mmusi Maimane South African politician

Mmusi Maimane is a South African politician, the former Leader of South Africa's opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) political party from 10 May 2015 to 23 October 2019, and the former Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of South Africa from 29 May 2014 to 24 October 2019. He is the former leader of the DA in the Johannesburg City Council and the DA National Spokesperson. In 2011, he was elected to be the DA's Johannesburg mayoral candidate in the 2011 municipal elections. In that election, Maimane helped to grow the party's voter base, but was not elected mayor. Thereafter he served as Leader of the Official Opposition on the Johannesburg City Council until May 2014. In addition to his political career, he is also a pastor and elder of the deeply conservative Liberty Church.

The Shadow Cabinet of Mmusi Maimane was formed on 5 June 2014 following his election as Parliamentary Leader of the Democratic Alliance and Leader of the Opposition on 29 May 2014. The Democratic Alliance parliamentary caucus also elected other caucus leadership. John Steenhuisen was elected Chief Whip with Anchen Dreyer as Caucus Chairperson. These elections all occurred following the 2014 general elections, in which the Democratic Alliance retained its post as the Official Opposition in the National Assembly of South Africa.

Thomas Walters (South African politician) South African politician

Thomas Charles Ravenscroft Walters is a South African politician. He has been serving as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since May 2014, representing the opposition Democratic Alliance. He previously served as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2014. In 2012, Walters was elected Deputy Federal Council Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance, and is currently serving alongside Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille since 2019. The 2019 Democratic Alliance Federal Council chairpersonship election was held on 20 October 2019 to elect the new Chairperson of the Federal Council of the Democratic Alliance (DA), after incumbent James Selfe had announced his retirement in June 2019.

Gwen Ngwenya, is a South African academic, politician and Head of Policy for the opposition Democratic Alliance. She resigned from the post of Head of Policy in January 2019, but returned in November 2019. As a Member of Parliament for the Democratic Alliance in the Fifth Parliament, she served on the Standing Committee on Finance. She has also served as COO of the South African Institute of Race Relations, Africa's largest classically liberal think tank.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is scheduled to hold its Federal Congress from 30 to 31 May 2020 to elect the new leadership of the party. The previous congress was held in 2018. In October 2019, then-party leader Mmusi Maimane announced that the party would seek to hold a policy conference and early elective congress in 2020. Maimane and former party chair Athol Trollip have since resigned from their positions. The party elected John Steenhuisen and Ivan Meyer as their interim successors, respectively.
