The Democratic Alliance (DA) is a South African political party and the official opposition to the governing African National Congress (ANC). The interim leader of the party is John Steenhuisen, who was elected on 17 November 2019 and succeeded Mmusi Maimane. The party is broadly centrist, and has been attributed both centre-left and centre-right policies. It is a member of the Liberal International and the Africa Liberal Network. The DA traces its roots to the founding of the anti-apartheid Progressive Party in 1959, with many mergers and name changes between that time and the present.

Semakaleng Patricia Kopane is a South African politician who serves as the Shadow Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure. She has served as a Member of the National Assembly since 2009. She is the Provincial Leader of the Democratic Alliance in the Free State province. Kopane previously served as Shadow Minister of Health, Shadow Minister of Public Works and Shadow Minister of Social Development. Professor Wilmot Godfrey James MP is a noted South African academic-turned-politician, who served as the country's Shadow Minister of Health and as a Member of Parliament for the opposition Democratic Alliance, and served as DA Federal Chairperson 2010-2015. He then contested for the post of party leader, but lost the election to Mmusi Maimane. James has served as director of Sanlam, Media24 and the Africa Genome Education Institute, and was the chairperson of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Immigration Advisory Board of South Africa. He is also a former Trustee of the Ford Foundation of New York. He currently is a Visiting Professor of Political Science and Pediatrics at Columbia University.
South Africa's Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet consists of Members of the National Assembly who scrutinise their corresponding office holders in the executive branch of government and develop alternative policies for their respective portfolios. The Democratic Alliance (DA) retained their position as official opposition following the 2014 general elections and announced their shadow cabinet on 5 June. The shadow cabinet has subsequently been reshuffled on many occasions namely on 24 November 2016 and 1 June 2017.
John Henry Steenhuisen is a South African politician who has been serving as the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly since October 2019 and the interim Federal Leader of the Democratic Alliance since November 2019. He previously served as the Chief Whip of the Official Opposition under the leadership of Mmusi Maimane from May 2014 to October 2019. He has been serving as a Member of the National Assembly since July 2011. Prior to his appointment to the National Assembly, he was involved with the politics of KwaZulu-Natal, serving as the Provincial Leader of the DA and the party's caucus leader in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature.
Tim Harris is a South African politician, a former Democratic Alliance member of the National Assembly, and a Parliamentary Counsellor to Mmusi Maimane, the Leader of the Opposition. He served as Shadow Minister of Finance from 2012 to 2014, and was succeeded by Dion George. Mmusi Maimane is a South African politician, the former Leader of South Africa's opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) political party from 10 May 2015 to 23 October 2019, and the former Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of South Africa from 29 May 2014 to 24 October 2019. He is the former leader of the DA in the Johannesburg City Council and the DA National Spokesperson. In 2011, he was elected to be the DA's Johannesburg mayoral candidate in the 2011 municipal elections. In that election, Maimane helped to grow the party's voter base, but was not elected mayor. Thereafter he served as Leader of the Official Opposition on the Johannesburg City Council until May 2014. In addition to his political career, he is also a pastor and elder of the deeply conservative Liberty Church.

The Democratic Alliance held its 6th Federal Congress in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape from 9 May to 10 May 2015. After incumbent leader Helen Zille announced she would not seek reelection, the Congress became focused on the contest to succeed her.
General elections were held in South Africa on 8 May 2019 to elect a new National Assembly and provincial legislatures in each province. These were the sixth elections held since the end of apartheid in 1994 and determined who would become the next President of South Africa.

Thomas Charles Ravenscroft Walters is a South African politician. He has been serving as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since May 2014, representing the opposition Democratic Alliance. He previously served as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2014. In 2012, Walters was elected Deputy Federal Council Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance, and is currently serving alongside Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille since 2019. He previously served alongside James Selfe. He was the party's Shadow Minister and Shadow Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform.

The 2019 Democratic Alliance Federal Council chairpersonship election was held on 20 October 2019 to elect the new Chairperson of the Federal Council of the Democratic Alliance (DA), after incumbent James Selfe had announced his retirement in June 2019.
Gwen Ngwenya, is a South African academic, politician and Head of Policy for the opposition Democratic Alliance. She resigned from the post of Head of Policy in January 2019, but returned in November 2019. As a Member of Parliament for the Democratic Alliance in the Fifth Parliament, she served on the Standing Committee on Finance. She has also served as COO of the South African Institute of Race Relations, Africa's largest classically liberal think tank.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) is scheduled to hold its Federal Congress from 30 to 31 May 2020 to elect the new leadership of the party. The previous congress was held in 2018. In October 2019, then-party leader Mmusi Maimane announced that the party would seek to hold a policy conference and early elective congress in 2020. Maimane and former party chair Athol Trollip have since resigned from their positions. The party elected John Steenhuisen and Ivan Meyer as their interim successors, respectively.
