James Selfe (born 23 August 1955) is a South African politician,a Member of Parliament for the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA),and the party's former Federal Council Chairperson. [1] He was also the party's Shadow Minister of Correctional Services. Selfe resigned from Parliament and as the Shadow Minister of Correctional Services with effect from 31 December 2021. [2]
Selfe was born in Pretoria,and attended Bishops (Diocesan College) and the University of Cape Town. [3] After earning a master's degree,Selfe worked between 1979 and 1988 as a researcher for the Progressive Federal Party,the forerunner to today's Democratic Alliance. He became the party's communications director in 1988,and a member of the President's Council a year later. In 1992 he became an executive director of the party. [3]
Selfe was elected to the Senate - later National Council of Provinces - in 1994 and participated in the Constitutional Assembly which drew up the democratic Constitution. [4] In 1999 he stayed in parliament,but moved to the National Assembly. [3] In 2004,he was re-elected to Parliament and became responsible for the Member of Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services [5] in addition to being chair of the Democratic Alliance's Federal Council. [3]
In June 2019,Selfe announced his retirement as chair of the Democratic Alliance's Federal Council.[ citation needed ] He served in the post for almost two decades under the leadership of Tony Leon,Helen Zille and Mmusi Maimane.[ citation needed ]
In February 2021,Selfe appeared before the Zondo Commission to testify on Bosasa's catering contracts for the Department of Correctional Services. [6] Selfe told the commission that his "many calls over many years" that Parliament should investigate Bosasa "fell on deaf ears". [6]
After 43 years in politics,Selfe announced his retirement in November 2021 due to deteriorating health. [2] On 10 December 2021,the National Assembly bid farewell to long-serving Selfe in its final sitting of 2021. [7] During this sitting,members of Parliament from across the aisle praised Selfe for his contributions to South Africa. [7]

John Henry Steenhuisen is a South African politician who has served as the twentieth leader of the Opposition since October 2019 and has been the leader of the Democratic Alliance since November 2020,having served as the interim leader for one year from November 2019. He was chief whip of the official opposition from May 2014 until October 2019. Ideologically,Steenhuisen has been described as a classical liberal,a supporter of non-racialism and a firm believer in racial equality.
Chris Hunsinger is a South African politician,a Member of the South African Parliament since 2014,Caucus Whip and Treasurer with the Democratic Alliance. He was appointed by the then Leader of the Opposition Mmusi Maimane on 5 June 2019 and retained by the current Leader of the Opposition John Steenhuisen in October 2019 and again in December 2020,as The Shadow Minister of Transport. Hunsinger was re-elected to Parliament on 6 June 2019. He speaks and writes about issues related to consumer and commodity needs in transport,including safety,planning,finance and management with South African road,rail,maritime,and aviation service providers.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) held its leadership conference virtually between 31 October and 1 November 2020. It was originally scheduled to be held in May 2020,but was postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The previous congress was held in 2018. In October 2019,then-party leader Mmusi Maimane announced that the party would seek to hold a policy conference and early elective congress in 2020. Maimane and former party chair Athol Trollip have since resigned from their positions and the DA. The party elected John Steenhuisen and Ivan Meyer as their interim successors,respectively.
Ashor Sarupen is a South African politician who serves as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa for the Democratic Alliance (DA),after having taken office on 22 May 2019. He is a representative of the party on both the Standing Committee on Appropriations and the Standing Committee on Finance. Mimmy Martha Gondwe is a South African politician serving as the Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises since 2023. A member of the Democratic Alliance,Gondwe was Shadow Deputy Minister of State Security from 2019 to 2020 and the Shadow Deputy Minister of Public Service and Administration between 2020 and 2023. Tsepo Winston Mhlongo is a South African politician. As a member of the Democratic Alliance,he served as a councillor in the City of Johannesburg until the 2014 national election,when he was elected to the National Assembly of South Africa. After that,he was appointed Shadow Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform. Mhlongo became the Shadow Minister of Sport and Recreation in January 2017 before he was selected to be Shadow Minister of Sports,Arts and Culture in June 2019. On 1 December 2023,Mhlongo was expelled from the DA and lost his parliamentary membership. He has since joined ActionSA.

In 2020,he was indicted on fraud and corruption charges emanating from his tenure as chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services from 2009 to 2014. He is accused of having accepted bribes from Bosasa,a major contractor of the Department of Correctional Services.
