Oxford University Cricket Club (OUCC),which represents the University of Oxford,has always held first-class status since 1827 when it made its debut in the inaugural University Match between OUCC and Cambridge University Cricket Club (CUCC). It was classified as a List A team in 1973 only. Home fixtures are played at the University Parks slightly northeast of Oxford city centre.
Cambridge University Cricket Club,established in 1820,is the representative cricket club for students of the University of Cambridge. Depending on the circumstances of each individual match,the club has always been recognised as holding first-class status. The university played List A cricket in 1972 and 1974 only. It has not played top-level Twenty20 cricket.
Samuel Moses James Woods was an Australian sportsman who represented both Australia and England at Test cricket,and appeared thirteen times for England at rugby union,including five times as captain. He also played at county level in England at both soccer and hockey. At cricket—his primary sport—he played over four hundred first-class matches in a twenty-four-year career. The majority of these matches were for his county side,Somerset,whom he captained from 1894 to 1906. A. A. Thomson described him thus:"Sammy ... radiated such elemental force in hard hitting,fast bowling and electrical fielding that he might have been the forerunner of Sir Learie Constantine."

Recreational matches are organised on a regional basis,with the top level being the ECB Premier Leagues.
George Herbert Chesterton MBE was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket between 1949 and 1966. The bulk of his appearances were for Worcestershire,whom he represented between 1950 and 1957. He was capped by the county in 1950. Very much a specialist bowler,he never reached 50 in over 100 first-class innings.
The Magdalen Ground was a cricket ground in Oxford,England. The ground was owned by the University of Oxford and used by Magdalen College,a constituent college of the University of Oxford. Originally forming the northern point of Cowley Marsh,the ground was initially associated with the Magdalen College School,whose students played cricket there. By 1829,the Oxford University Cricket Club had been given a part of the marsh where the College School played cricket. In 1851,it was purchased at auction by the University of Oxford and leased to the University Cricket Club. The ground operated as a first-class cricket venue from 1829 to 1880,hosting 69 first-class matches. The University Cricket Club left the ground following the 1880 season to play at the University Parks from 1881.
Jonathon Colin Mark Atkinson was an English cricketer. He was born at Butleigh,Somerset. He played first-class and List A cricket for Somerset and Cambridge University between 1985 and 1990. He was educated at Millfield School where his father was headmaster.
