Jonathon Marshall (born 15 November 2004 in Akron, Ohio) is an English swimmer of American descent. He has a dual citizenship with United States and Great Britain. [1] [2] [3] Marshall specializes in backstroke events. He represents Great Britain in international competitions and the Florida Gators in NCAA contention.

Marshall is a three time champion in the SEC championships. He holds the SEC meet and Florida Gators team record in the 200y backstroke and 400y medley relay. [4]

Notably, Marshall holds the fastest 100y backstroke for a freshman in NCAA history with a time of 42:12. [5]

Early life

Marshall was born on 15 November 2004, in Akron OH, the son of Steve and Louise Marshall. [6] Both Steve and Louise were swimmers for the University of Cincinnati. [7] Louise represented Great Britain on the National Team. [8]

Marshall attended Firestone high school in Akron, Ohio. While swimming at Firestone, Marshall set five of the eight individual school records. [9] He committed to swim for the University of Florida beginning in the 2023-2024 season. [10]

Career

Marshall won a four medals at 2022 European Junior Swimming Championships, a gold in the 4 × 100 m medley relay, a silver in the 50 m backstroke, a bronze in the 100 m backstroke and a mixed relay silver. [11] He also made his senior debut for Great Britain in 2022 at the 2022 European Aquatics Championships. [12]

In his freshman year at the 2024 Southeastern Conference championships, Marshall won the 100 yard backstroke in 44.12 besting runner up Adam Chaney. This mark lands Marshall as the fastest freshman in NCAA history in the event. [13] Marshall also won the 200 yard backstroke in a time of 1:36.68, setting the SEC meet record in the event. [14] He led off the school-record setting and SEC champion 400y medley relay with a 1:56.21 200y backstroke on their way to a 3:00:49 finish. [15] At the NCAA championships, Marshall placed eighth and fourth in the 100 yard backstroke and 200 yard backstroke respectively. [16]

In 2024, Marshall finished second in the 100 metres backstroke at the 2024 Aquatics GB Swimming Championships. His time of 53.03 seconds, behind Oliver Morgan (who won the event in a national record) was fast enough to meet the British consideration criteria for a place at the 2024 Summer Olympics. [17] He was subsequently named in the British team for the Olympics. [18]

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Marshall swam a 53.93 in prelims to qualify through to semifinals in the 16th spot. In semifinals, Marshall swam 53.46 to finish in 14th place. [19]

The Auburn Tigers swimming and diving program is Auburn University's representative in the sport of swimming and diving. The Tigers compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 and are members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The program started in 1932 when the pool was in the basement of the gymnasium. The program had to telegraph their timed results to other schools and compare as the pool was too small for competitions.

Kieran Smith is an American swimmer specializing in freestyle and individual medley events. He currently co-holds short course world records in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay and the 4×100-meter medley relay. He is the Americas record holder in the long course 400-meter freestyle and the American record holder in the 500-yard freestyle. In the 400-meter freestyle, he won the bronze medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics and the gold medal at the 2022 World Short Course Championships. Rhyan Elizabeth White is an American swimmer. She won a silver medal in the 4x100-meter medley relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics for her contribution in the prelims of the event and placed fourth in both the 100-meter backstroke and the 200-meter backstroke. At the 2020 Olympics, White also became the first Utah-born swimmer to compete in an Olympic Games. At the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, she was the only swimmer representing the United States to win a medal. She won her first world title in the 200-meter backstroke at the 2021 World Short Course Championships.

Dean Farris is an American former swimmer. From 2019 until 2024 he was the American record holder in the 200 yard freestyle. He won the 2019 NCAA Division I Championships titles in the 100 yard backstroke and 100 yard freestyle. At the 2019 World University Games he won two gold medals, one in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay and one in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay.

Macguire McDuff is an American swimmer and former USA National Team Member. He is a five-time NCAA champion and a former American record holder.
