Smith played for the New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers and Ottawa Senators, having been originally selected by New Jersey in the first round, 18th overall, at the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. NCAA Division I independent schools are four-year institutions that compete in college athletics at the NCAA Division I level, but do not belong to an established athletic conference for a particular sport. These schools may however still compete as members of an athletic conference in other sports. A school may also be fully independent, and not belong to any athletic conference for any sport at all. Liu Zhixin is a Chinese ice hockey player and member of the Chinese national team, currently playing in the Chinese Women's Ice Hockey League (WCIHL) with Shenzhen KRS. A two-time Olympian, she was the youngest member of the Chinese delegation at the 2010 Winter Olympics, where she represented the country in the women's ice hockey tournament, and also represented China in the women's ice hockey tournament at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Her participation in 2010 at age 16 years, 294 days made her the second-youngest player to ever participate in the Olympic women's ice hockey tournament, after Anna Prugova of Russia, who also debuted at the 2010 Olympics.

Joni Ortio is a Finnish professional ice hockey goaltender who is currently an unrestricted free agent. He most recently played for HV71 of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). He has previously played for the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was a sixth-round selection of the Flames, 171st overall, at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Before the NHL he played for TPS and HIFK Helsinki in the Sm-liiga. Internationally, Ortio has represented Finland on four occasions. Justin Michael Faulk is an American professional ice hockey defenseman and alternate captain for the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League (NHL). He previously played for the Carolina Hurricanes for the first eight years of his career. He was selected by the Hurricanes in the 2nd round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

The New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) is a women's college ice hockey conference in the United States. It participates in the NCAA's Division I as a hockey-only conference. As of the most recent 2023–24 NCAA hockey season, the conference is made up of eight teams, with two each in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, and one each in New York and Vermont.
The LIU Sharks men's ice hockey team represents Long Island University in NCAA Division I ice hockey. The school announced their intention to begin a varsity schedule for the 2020–21 season on April 30, 2020. While starting out as an independent, the Sharks are a scheduling partner of Atlantic Hockey for at least their first season.
Kai Ortio is a Finnish retired ice hockey player and the current head coach of Turun Palloseura (TPS) Akatemia U16, a junior ice hockey team in the U16 Mestis. During his playing career, he played two seasons in the SM-liiga, appearing with HC TPS in 45 games during the 1987–88 and 1988–89 seasons and registering three points and 22 penalty minutes.
