Admiral Jorge Godoy is a former Chief of Staff of the Argentine Navy, being in office until December 2011. [1]

Personal life

Jorge Godoy was born on January 17, 1946, in Mar del Plata, Argentina. He is married to former María Laura Valdivia Lúpiz and they have two children. [2]

Domestic Espionage Charges

In December 2011, Godoy retired upon being charged with domestic espionage against politicians, civic activists, and human rights organizations. According to the accusation, Godoy is culpable because the practice was widespread and continuous across the Navy. [3] Article 248 of the Argentine Penal Code forbids military intelligence agencies from investigating citizens, and from operating within the domestic sphere. [4] As of August 2012, Godoy has been convicted and is awaiting sentencing. [5]

The Trelew Massacre was a mass execution of 16 political prisoners, militants of different Peronist and left organizations, in Rawson prison by the military dictatorship of Argentina. The prisoners were recaptured after an escape attempt and subsequently shot down by marines led by Lieutenant Commander Luis Emilio Sosa in a simulated new attempt to escape. The marines forced the prisoners to fake a new escape, then executed them as revenge by the Revolución Argentina for the successful escape of some of their comrades during the initial prison break. The massacre took place in the early hours of 22 August 1972 in the Almirante Marcos A. Zar Airport, an Argentine Navy airbase located near the city of Trelew, Chubut in Patagonia.
