Jose Santos Rios (December 19, 1939 - January 21, 2018) was a Northern Mariana Islands politician and educator who served as the third Mayor of Saipan from January 8, 1982, until January 7, 1986. [1] [2] [3] The present-day office of mayor, which governs the territorial capital, was created in 1978 following the declaration of the Northern Mariana Islands a Commonwealth in January 1978. [1]

Santos was born on December 19, 1939. [2] [3] He enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Korean War during the early 1950s. [2] Santos would later join the United States Peace Corps and was stationed on the Micronesian island of Chuuk. [2] [3]

Jose Santos Rios died on January 21, 2018, at the age of 78. [2] He was survived by his wife, Emilia Rios, and their four children, Roy Rios, Marie Martinez, Remay McNally, Joseph Rios Jr., and Son

Ted De Leon Guerrero  [1]  [3]  Santos was given a military funeral with burial at a veterans cemetery in Washington state on February 2, 2018. [1]  An official memorial service was held at the Saipan Leadership Memorial Courtyard, also known as the kiosku, in Chalan Kanoa on February 23, 2018. [2]  [3]  Dignitaries in attendance included Governor Ralph Torres, U.S. Rep. Gregorio Sablan, Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang, and members of the Northern Mariana Islands Commonwealth Legislature. In early Spanish records it is called "Zarpana"; the name Rota may have come from the Spaniards possibly naming the island after the municipality of Rota, Spain. It lies approximately 40 nautical miles (74 km) north-northeast of the United States territory of Guam. Sinapalo village is the largest and most populated, followed by Songsong village (Songsong).

Benjamin Taisacan Manglona was a politician and civil engineer in the United States Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). He is the CNMI's longest serving elected official having served as a congressman, senator, and former mayor of Rota. Manglona served as the third Lieutenant Governor of the Northern Mariana Islands from 1990 to 1994 and as Mayor of Rota from 1998 to 2006.

Benigno Fitial

Benigno Repeki Fitial was the seventh governor of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). The second longest-serving governor in CNMI history, Fitial was elected on November 6, 2005, assumed office on January 9, 2006, and was re-elected to a (five-year) second term in 2009. He was impeached by the CNMI House of Representatives on February 11, 2013 and was scheduled to face trial before the CNMI Senate to determine if he should be removed from office. He resigned on February 20, 2013 after 7 years, 1 month, and 11 days in office.

2018 Northern Mariana Islands gubernatorial election

The 2018 Northern Mariana gubernatorial election took place on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, to elect the Governor of the Northern Mariana Islands and the Lieutenant Governor of the Northern Mariana Islands to a four-year term in office. The election, which corresponds to the larger Northern Mariana general election and the United States midterms, was originally scheduled to be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. However, Governor Ralph Torres postponed all elections in the territory until November 13 due to the impact of Typhoon Yutu, which struck the Northern Mariana Islands as a Category 5 storm in October 2018, shortly before the planned elections.

The 2018 United States House of Representatives election in the Northern Mariana Islands was held on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, to elect the territory's Delegate to the United States House of Representatives in the 116th United States Congress. Delegate Gregorio Sablan was re-elected to his sixth term as Delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives from the Northern Mariana Islands' at-large district.

Saipan International School School in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands

Saipan International School (SIS) is an independent, not-for-profit international school located on the island of Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands. Founded in 1994, SIS has approximately 250 students enrolled in Pre-K through 12th grade, making it one of the larger private schools and the only international school in the Commonwealth.

State Library of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is the public library system of the Northern Mariana Islands.

A small independent cinema of Northern Mariana Islands, producing mostly documentary films, developed in the 21st century thanks to the efforts of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and of the Northern Marianas College. Films had already been shot in the islands in the 20th century by foreign producers.

Sugar King Park

Sugar King Park is a municipal park located in Garapan, Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands across from the NMI Museum of History and Culture. The park was named in honor of the "Sugar King" Haruji Matsue, director of the South Seas Development Company.
