Josh Brand (born 1980) is an artist who lives and works in New York. [1]
Brand was born in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, US in 1980. He undertook his BFA at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago, graduating in 2002. [2]
He undertook his BFA and MFA in Fine Art at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago between 1971-1978.[ citation needed ] Brand had a darkroom in his family basement, and as a teenager he would experiment for hours with the chemistry of photography, later working as a professional printer. His process-based photographic ‘objects’ are often made as the result of a physically manipulated, completely camera-less procedure. [3] [4] [5]
Brand's work has been exhibited at the Whitney Biennial, [6] White Columns, New York, [7] Dallas Museum of Art, [8] the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, [9] the CEAAC (European Center for Contemporary Art Actions), Strasbourg, [10] the Emily Harvey Foundation, New York, [11] Leubsdorf Gallery at Hunter College, New York [12] and Drawing Room, London. Michelle Grabner is an artist, curator, and critic based in Wisconsin. She is the Crown Family Professor of Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she has taught since 1996. She has curated several important exhibitions, including the 2014 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art along with Anthony Elms and Stuart Comer, and FRONT International, the 2016 Portland Biennial at the Oregon Contemporary, a triennial exhibition in Cleveland, Ohio in 2018. In 2014, Grabner was named one of the 100 most powerful women in art and in 2019, she was named a 2019 National Academy of Design's Academician, a lifetime honor.
