Josh Costello is an Irish rugby union footballer who plays as a winger for Shannon RFC, Munster Rugby and the Ireland national rugby sevens team.

Early life

He attended St Munchin's College in Limerick, Ireland. In 2022, he was playing for the Munster Rugby academy. [1]

Club career

In May 2023 he scored a brace of tries in the All Ireland League play-off for Shannon RFC. [2] Later that year he played for the development side of Munster Rugby and featured as a replacement in first-team matches for the club, making his senior debut against Connacht Rugby in September 2023. [3] [4] [5]

International career

In 2022 he featured for Ireland U19. [6] In the 2022-2023 season, he played for Ireland national under-20 rugby union team. [7] [8]

He made his starting debut for Ireland national rugby sevens team against the United States in the 2023-24 SVNS series. [9] He played for Ireland against France in the final of the 2024 Rugby Europe Sevens Championship Series in Croatia in June 2024. [10]

He was then also selected for the Irish Sevens squad that started the 2024-25 SVNS series, scoring a brace of tries at the Dubai Sevens against Uruguay on 30 November 2024. [11]

The club is one of the top amateur sides in Ireland has seen many of its players progress to professional and international rugby. The 1st XV plays in Division 1B of the All-Ireland League. While the women's side compete in Division 1 of the Munster League. Shannon RFC fields underage teams for boys and girls from u6s - u20s. Shannon RFC made history in 2017 as being the first club in the country to field a girls u20s side.

The IRFU Women's Interprovincial Series, previously known as the IWRFU Interprovincial Championship, is the top level women's rugby union competition in Ireland. It is organised by the Irish Rugby Football Union. It is the women's equivalent of the IRFU Interprovincial Championship. The competition takes place every December and features four teams representing Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster. The competition effectively acts as a selection trials process for the Ireland women's national rugby union team that competes in the subsequent Women's Six Nations Championship. Since 2016 the IRFU has also organised a similar under 18s competition.

Seán Cronin is a former Irish rugby union player who played as a hooker for Leinster in the United Rugby Championship. He also played for the Ireland national rugby union team.

Mossy Lawler is an Irish former rugby union player who currently works as a coach. He primarily played as a wing or fullback, but also covered fly-half and centre. Lawler spent most of his playing career with Munster, playing in the Celtic League and Heineken Cup, and also played three games on a trial period for English Premiership side London Wasps in 2008. After leaving the professional game, he continued to play at amateur level in Ireland for Shannon and UL Bohemians, before retiring fully in 2015.

Connacht Rugby and Ulster Rugby are two Irish rugby union provincial teams that possess a rivalry that dates back to their IRFU Interprovincial Championship clashes during the amateur era. That rivalry has continued during the professional era and intensified as Connacht have more competitive in the domestic league, winning 2015-16 Pro12 championship. Connacht and Ulster comprise two of the four Irish provincial teams competing in the United Rugby Championship. As such, the two sides regularly face each other during the regular season. Typically, Ulster have had the advantage in the series with Connacht failing to achieve a single victory over Ulster between 1965 and 1982. Following Connacht's victory in 1983, it would not be until the 1997–98 season until they would achieve their next victory over Ulster. Connacht also went 58 years without winning a match in Belfast.
