Josh Kempen (born 3 November 1988) is a South African and Australian singer-songwriter, actor and model. In 2018, his album, The Morning Show, was nominated for a South African Music Award for Best Alternative Album.

Early life

Kempen was born in Johannesburg in South Africa in 1988. He emigrated to Australia as a child with his parents. The first album he owned was by Sixto Rodriguez. He learned the guitar at the age of fifteen. [1] After high school, he pursued a law degree and qualified as an attorney. [2] He worked at Harvey Nossel Attorneys in Johannesburg. [1] He also worked as a waiter in Lake Como in Italy. [1]

Career

Music

Kempen was performing at Oppikoppi in South Africa, where Warner Music South Africa executives saw him perform and subsequently offered him a record deal. [1] [3] He has also performed at Splashy Fen, South Africa's longest-running music festival. [4] [5]

In 2015, he released his debut EP, The Midnight Ship and received a nomination for "Songwriter of the Year" from the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO). [5] He was selected as an "Artist to Watch in 2016" by Deezer ZA. [5] In 2016, he performed at the Park Acoustics music festival held at the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria. [6]

His debut album, The Morning Show was released in 2017. [5] It was preceded by the singles, "The River" and "Pistol". [5] "The River" peaked at number 9 on the South African iTunes chart and at number 6 on the South African singles chart. [5] [7] In March 2017, he released his third single, "Leave Me if You Can". [8] In 2018, the album was nominated at the South African Music Awards for "Best Alternative Album". [9] In support of the album, he performed on Radio 702, South Africa's leading radio station. He also performed on television's Expresso Morning Show on the SABC. [10] The album charted at number 3 on the iTunes albums chart. It was described by Apple Music’s editor as “an album rich with narrative lyricism and sincere, hard one perspective." Apple Music also chose Kempen as “Artist of the Month.” [11]

In 2020, he released his second album, Oltramarino. [12] It was preceded by the singles, "Need Some Company" feat. Soulphia Town and "Promises". [13] [14] [15] [16]

Since 2024, he has been part of the indie-pop duo, PAMELA, with Neighbours actress, Sarah Ellen. [17] [18]

Acting

In 2011, he had a minor role in the South African historical drama, Winnie Mandela , based on the life of Nelson Mandela's former wife, Winnie Mandela. [19]

In 2021, he graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney, with a Diploma of Stage & Screen Performance. [20] [2]

In 2024, he currently appears in a recurring role in the second season of Paramount+ drama series, Last King of the Cross . The series is set in Sydney's Kings Cross and Oxford Street. [19]

In 2024, he returned to South Africa to film the feature film, This Is How the World Ends, directed by Robert dos Santos. The film is set during the AfrikaBurn festival in South Africa. [21] [22]

Modelling

As a model, Kempen is represented by Vivien's Model Management in Australia, and The Circle in South Africa. [23] [24] Among his campaigns, he filmed an advert for Audi in 2023. [25]

Freshlyground was a band formed in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2008. Freshlyground is best known for writing, perform and playing the instrumentals of the afrofusion and soca single "Waka Waka " alongside Colombian singer Shakira, which received worldwide recognition. The music video featuring the group has achieved over 3.9 billion views on YouTube, which has resulted in it becoming one of the most-viewed videos on the platform.

Oppikoppi was a music festival held in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, near the mining town of Northam. The festival started off focusing mostly on rock music, but gradually added more genres and now plays host to a complete mixed bag of genres. Anything from jazz, world music, house music, acoustic, comedy and all else in between can be heard on one of the multiple stages. Each year in the first week of August — except for 2017, when the festival was held in October — thousands of people used to flock to the farm to camp out in the bush and enjoy the music for several days. The festival features mostly South African bands, although international acts are included in the line-up.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Splashy Fen</span> South African music festival

Established in 1990, Splashy Fen is South Africa's longest-running music festival, which every Easter attracts thousands of people to a farm near Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal for a unique outdoor music experience. Also present are arts and crafts stalls, food and drink outlets, crèche and children's entertainment programme, as well as various camping and accommodation options. The most recent festival took place from the 28th March-1st April 2024.

Captain Stu was a South African ska band. The band developed their signature style in the Cape Town ska scene, combining elements of jazz and reggae with South African influences to create an upbeat sound reflecting the atmosphere of Cape Town.

MaxNormal.TV was a South African music group that formed in 2001 and eventually evolved into Die Antwoord. The group's name was taken from a comic book character in the Judge Dredd comic of the same name.
