Joy Woods is an American stage actress.
Woods studied at American Musical and Dramatic Academy and graduated in 2019. [1] The following fall, she made her off-Broadway debut in the 2019 revival of Little Shop of Horrors as Chiffon and understudy for Audrey and Ronnette. [2] In February 2020, she starred in the ensemble of the New York City Center Encores! concert production of Mack and Mabel . [3]
In 2021, she was featured in the virtual Ratatouille: the TikTok Musical. [4]
On March 14th, 2022, Woods made her Broadway debut as Catherine Parr in Six. [5]
In the fall of 2022, Woods starred as Middle Allie in The Notebook at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. [6] She then played Deena Jones in North Carolina Theatre's production of Dreamgirls in February 2023. [7]
On May 2nd 2023, Woods returned to Little Shop of Horrors, this time in the lead role of Audrey. In doing so, she became the first Black woman to play the role off-Broadway. [8] In the fall of 2023, she starred as Martha Mills in I Can Get It for You Wholesale at Classic Stage Company. [9] [10]
Woods reprised her role in the Broadway transfer of The Notebook, which opened on March 14th, 2024. Her performance of the show's 11 o'clock number, "My Days" went viral on Instagram, gaining over 3 million views. [11] She is set to leave the production on October 20, 2024. She will be replaced by Aisha Jackson. [12]
Woods will star as Louise in the 2024 Broadway revival of Gypsy at the newly refurbished Majestic Theatre opposite Audra McDonald. She will star alongside her The Notebook co-star Jordan Tyson. [13] The production is scheduled to open on December 19th. It had previously been announced that Woods would star as Sarah in the New York City Center gala production of Ragtime, but she withdrew from the production to star in Gypsy. The role was instead played by Nichelle Lewis. [14]

Little Shop of Horrors is a horror comedy rock musical with music by Alan Menken and lyrics and a book by Howard Ashman. The story follows a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood and flesh. The musical is loosely based on the low-budget 1960 black comedy film The Little Shop of Horrors. Due to physical distancing requirements and closure of the physical venues, curtailing not only public performances but also rehearsals, many performing arts institutions attempted to adapt by offering new digital services. In particular this resulted in the free online streaming of previously recorded performances of many companies – especially orchestral performances and plays – lists of which were collated by journalists as well as bespoke crowdsourcing projects.
Ratatouille the Musical is an Internet meme and crowdsourced musical based on the 2007 Disney/Pixar film Ratatouille. TikTok user Emily Jacobsen created a short comedic song in tribute to Remy, a rat with a talent for cooking and the main character of the film, in August 2020. This led to another TikTok user, Daniel Mertzlufft, arranging Jacobsen's tribute as if it were a finale to a Disney musical. From there, additional TikTok users continued to add to Mertzlufft's video to envision a full musical, including a playbill, scenic design, choreography, and more songs. In December 2020, Seaview Productions announced a charity benefit concert presentation of the musical. The benefit concert was streamed for 72 hours beginning on January 1, 2021, followed by an encore presentation on January 10, 2021. In total, the production raised $2 million for The Actors Fund and had 350,000 total viewers.
