Jyotsna Biswas is a Bangladeshi stage actress specialized in jatra pala genre. [1] She was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2011 by the Government of Bangladesh. [2]

Jatra (theatre)

Jatra is a popular folk-theatre form of Bengali theatre, spread throughout most of Bengali speaking areas of the Indian subcontinent, including Bangladesh and Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Orissa and Tripura As of 2005, there were some 55 troupes based in Calcutta's old jatra district, Chitpur Road, and all together, jatra is a $21m-a-year industry, performed on nearly 4,000 stages in West Bengal alone, where in 2001, over 300 companies employed over 20,000 people, more than the local film industry and urban theatre.

Ekushey Padak

Ekushey Padak is the second highest civilian award in Bangladesh, introduced in memory of the martyrs of the Bengali Language Movement of 1952. The award is given to recognize contributions in a number of fields, including culture, education, and economics. The Ministry of Cultural Affairs administers the award.

The Government of Bangladesh has three branches; the Executive branch, the Legislative branch and the Judicial branch.

Personal life

Biswas was married to Amalendu Biswas. Amalendu was also an Ekushey Padak winning jatra actor. Together they have a daughter, Aruna Biswas [3] who is an actress and television drama director. [3]

Amalendu Biswas was a Bangladeshi stage actor. Calling Jatra Samrat, he specialized in jatra pala genre. He won Sequence of Merit Award by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in 1980. He was awarded Ekushey Padak by the Government of Bangladesh posthumously in 1989.

Aruna Biswas is a Bangladeshi television, stage and film actress. She is also a television drama director.
