K. V. K. Raju

KVK Raju (28 November 1928 - 1993), whose surname is Kanumuri, was a first generation technopreneur born in a humble agricultural family in Andhra Pradesh. He was the founder of the Nagarjuna Group of companies. He was born in a small village at Bhimavaram in West Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh. He belonged to a family which has played a part in the struggle for political freedom in India. [1]

Early life

He was born to Shri Kanumuri Venkata Narasimha Raju, a Landlord and Shrimati Subbamma, a pious lady. KVK Raju had his elementary education in a local school during 1933–38. he passed Secondary School Leaving Certificate Course from Sri Rama Krishna Mission School, Tanuku in 1945. He was the first batch of Intermediate in 1945–46 at West Godavari Bhimavaram (WGB) College, subsequently renamed D.N.R College.

During 1947–49, KVK Raju studied B.Sc course in Banaras Hindu University at Varanasi and later he joined the Madras Institute of Technology at Choromepet, Madras and did Automobile Engineering. He went on to complete his Master's in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering from Michigan State University and the University of Minnesota, USA.

Work life

After a short stint in America he returned to India and worked for short periods at Caltex Oil Refinery, Orient General Industries and Associated Electrical Industries.

Finally, he joined Union Carbide of India and worked with them for 17 years at various places - Calcutta, Madras, Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad. While working with Union Carbide, KVK Raju's deep-rooted urge to serve society through industry impelled him to start out on his own.

He started Nagarjuna Steels Limited in 1973. Nagarjuna Group is a dream willed into reality by its visionary Founder Shri KVK Raju. The Group has since then become a diversified conglomerate with an asset base of 3.5 billion dollars.

He then set up a school for workers of NFCL named Akshara School.

Achievements

A recipient of various awards for his outstanding contribution to the industry and society, KVK Raju was a firm believer in the adage "practice what you preach". A self-made man KVK Raju practised simple living and high thinking. He dreamt big and worked with an unstinted focus of mind and body to make his dreams come true. KVK Raju was a visionary with firm belief in his mission to serve society through industry. It is this belief, which continues today to be the guiding light of Nagarjuna Group.

Alluri Sitarama Raju was an Indian revolutionary involved in the Indian independence movement. After the passing of the 1882 Madras Forest Act, its restrictions on the free movement of tribal people in the forest prevented them from engaging in their traditional podu agricultural system, which involved shifting cultivation. Alluri led the Rampa Rebellion of 1922, during which a band of tribal people and other sympathisers fought in the border areas of the East Godavari and Visakhapatnam regions of Madras Presidency, in present-day Andhra Pradesh, against the British Raj, which had passed the law. History of Andhra Pradesh

The recorded history of Andhra Pradesh, one of the 28 states of 21st-century India, begins in the Vedic period. It is mentioned in Sanskrit epics such as the Aitareya Brahmana. Its sixth-century BCE incarnation Assaka lay between the Godavari and Krishna Rivers, one of sixteen mahajanapadas. The Satavahanas succeeded them, built Amaravati, and reached a zenith under Gautamiputra Satakarni.

Noble College in Machilipatnam was founded by late Robert Turlington Noble, an English missionary, in 1843. Rev. Noble came to then Masulipatnam as a Christian Missionary in 1841 and stayed until his death. He and his friend late Mr. Sharkey opened a native English school on 21 November 1843 as Noble High School. That school became Noble College later on. This school was termed by the head of the Madras Government "The Cambridge of South India." It is one of the first four educational institutions opened in India by the British Government.

Roy Award for organizing and developing neurosurgery in Andhra Pradesh. In 2008, he was conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Science by the Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences. In 2015, he was awarded Lifetime Achievement award by the Telangana government.

Datla Venkata Suryanarayana Raju, better known as D. V. S. Raju was an Indian film producer known for his works in Telugu Cinema and Bollywood. He was instrumental in shifting the Telugu film industry from Chennai to Hyderabad. He was the recipient of the Raghupathi Venkaiah Award, the Bhishma Award and the Padma Shri for his contributions to Indian cinema.

He hails from the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh and is the Managing Trustee of the International Cancer Center, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical Trust located at Bhimavaram. Vetukuri Venkata Siva Rama Raju, also known as Kalavapudi Siva, is an Indian politician and member of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly representing Telugu Desam Party (TDP) from Undi.
