The Victoria Institution is the oldest secondary school in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is a memorial school, so-called because it was partly funded by public subscription intended for the erection of a permanent memorial to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887. The establishment of the school was further supported by financial contributions from the Sultan and government of Selangor, prominent Kuala Lumpur residents, and the general public.

Malaysian contemporary music is an artistic phenomenon within Malaysia that has its roots in the 1980s with pioneer composers like Valerie Ross. However, little information about that period exists in written sources. The genre gained visibility and momentum only in the new millennium due to the internet phenomenon, and in 2002 in particular, when the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) programmed several works by Malaysian composers, namely Chong Kee Yong's Echoed Dream (2002), Sunetra Fernando's 'Wayang' (2002) and Tazul Izan Tajuddin's Sebuah Tenunan III (2003). They represent the first local commissions by a professional symphony orchestra in the country. Interest in orchestral music by Malaysian composers grew and when the orchestra held its first Forum For Malaysian Composers in 2003 the event was a triumph for the local music scene.
Kolej Yayasan Saad (KYS), formerly known as the Saad Foundation College, was established by Tan Sri Halim Saad as a private, entirely residential institution in 1995. It was built as a tribute to his late father. The school is located in Ayer Keroh, Malacca. In both the Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3 (PT3) and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exams, the school is popularly known for achieving outstanding outcomes. The school only accepts scholars who demonstrate merit. Students who want to be admitted into this school submit their applications online, where their applications has to go through stringent selection process that takes into account their academic standing, potential for leadership, and extracurricular engagement. Only roughly 100 slots countrywide are available out of about 5000 submissions. about 100 spots are offered for the Form 1 batch yearly. Half of these spots are set aside for scholars from lowly socio-economic environments where they are funded by local GLCs or organisations such as Axiata Foundation and Yayasan Khazanah. The school fee averages at around RM40,000 yearly
